The 2025-2035 Emission Reduction Crop Production Project developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is considered a comprehensive project for Vietnam's emission reduction crop production. In particular, the project aims to reduce emissions by at least 10% in the crop production sector by 2035.
According to the project, the agricultural sector will organize the implementation of at least 15 emission reduction production models in ecological regions, with the potential for replication; pilot at least 5 farming models capable of developing carbon credits that meet the requirements of international organizations.
Develop and issue at least 5 emission reduction production technical packages applicable to 5 key crops. Form a database of emissions in crop cultivation (by crop, ecological region) synchronously connected with the National Registration System.
Organize training on techniques, policies, general awareness and emission measurement tools for at least 3,000 grassroots technical staff, agricultural extension officers, farmers and businesses nationwide.
Develop at least 5 sets of communication documents, disseminate knowledge, and promote the transformation of farmers' production behavior towards emission reduction.
The economic , environmental and social impacts of the Project are clearly assessed. Specifically, applying techniques such as alternate wetting and drying (AWD), proper fertilizer management, and the use of biological materials help reduce input costs by 5-15% compared to conventional farming (especially evident in rice, sugarcane, and coffee).
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung said that if appropriate technical solutions are applied, the crop cultivation industry can completely reduce emissions.
Deputy Minister Hoang Trung stated that the urgent requirement now is to transform the crop production model towards low emissions, sustainability, and flexible adaptation to climate change. Crop production is not only a sector with large greenhouse gas emissions, but also has great potential in reducing emissions.
"If properly oriented, systematically implemented and applying appropriate technical solutions that are both cost-effective and scalable, emission reduction in the crop production sector can be completely implemented on a national scale as well as at each farm level," said Deputy Minister Hoang Trung.
Agricultural production towards emission reduction, carbon traceability, and environmental certification will help access high-value markets such as the EU, Japan, North America... with selling prices increasing by 10 - 25% compared to conventional products.
In addition, it also contributes significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that if the comprehensive solutions from the Project are effectively implemented, it can help reduce 8 - 11 million tons of CO₂ equivalent/year, contributing to the NDC.
