On July 29, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick announced that the Trump administration would implement a new trade policy. Agricultural products such as coffee, cocoa, mangoes, and pineapples that are not produced in the US will be exempt from tariffs if the exporting country signs an agreement with the US.
A specific example is the “US-Indonesia Trade Agreement” just announced by the White House. The US will identify items that are not available domestically for tariff exemptions or reductions. Indonesia has a 19% tariff on some goods, but coffee, cocoa and tropical fruits may be exempted from 0% tariffs in the future.
This policy is expected to boost exports from developing countries such as Indonesia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Vietnam, which have strengths in tropical agricultural products. At the same time, it helps reduce consumer costs in the US, supporting people against food inflation pressures.
