Don't be "dependent" on AI

Working in modern times poses new requirements for journalists to master technology, but also comes with a mandatory requirement: Not letting artificial intelligence (AI) replace the verification role and creativity of journalists.

Many utilities

In the context of modern journalism, AI brings many practical benefits. This technology helps journalists process large amounts of data, summarize information quickly, and find sources effectively.

AI tools such as data analysis, content automation, or media trend identification help save time and improve article quality.

Journalist Du Xuan Nha (Bao Ve Phap Luat Newspaper) shared that AI is truly a “revolution” for modern journalists. “AI helps me summarize hundreds of pages of reports in just a few minutes, helping to identify important highlights. It also suggests relevant sources of information, from which I can dig deeper into the issue without spending too much time.”

According to journalist Du Xuan Nha, AI is not only a search engine but also supports complex data analysis, such as statistics or financial reports, helping journalists write sharper articles.

In addition, AI also supports detecting fake news and identifying false information patterns on social networks, thereby helping journalists verify news sources faster.

Platforms like Google Fact Check Tools and big data analytics tools all integrate AI, providing greater accuracy in processing information. In the era of information explosion, when there are millions of articles and posts online every day, AI becomes a powerful assistant, helping journalists avoid being "flooded" in a sea of data.

Mastering technology

Although AI brings many benefits, overusing this tool can lead to certain troubles, even "leading" journalists in the wrong direction in data analysis and processing.

AI often relies on available data to generate content, so sometimes it makes incorrect or inaccurate inferences if the original data source is unreliable. AI-generated content is often formulaic, lacking in sophistication and emotion, making the article dry and difficult to touch the reader's heart.

A notable opinion of Director of the Institute for Policy Studies and Media Development (IPS) Nguyen Quang Dong said that only about 34% of reporters in Vietnam use tools such as Google Analytics to analyze reader data. Meanwhile, AI can personalize content for each group of readers very effectively.

“Journalists should understand who their readers are, what they want, and where they read. Journalists should not approach AI with two extremes: either replacing it or opposing it. Live with it and make use of it as an indispensable part, but do not lose the essence of being a journalist.

In a world where AI can "write for us", "speak for us", "suggest for us" - the only thing that keeps journalists' position is the ability to think independently, feel honestly and engage with reality' - said Mr. Nguyen Quang Dong.

AI is a tool to assist, not a replacement for journalists. If abused, journalists risk losing their creativity and ability to verify information, the core elements of journalism, leading to works that lack “life.”

AI-generated articles may be informative but lack emotional depth, linguistic nuances, or the small details that make an article compelling.

An easy-to-see example is when writing about an event, AI can provide data, date and time, but it is difficult to convey the emotions of the participants, the excitement of the atmosphere, or side stories that only journalists who witnessed it firsthand can record.

Journalist Nguyen Thanh Hieu (Petrotimes Electronic Magazine) shared that to master technology, journalists need to combine the use of AI with traditional skills. AI can support searching and analyzing data, but verifying information, exploiting real-world sources, and creating content must still be done by humans.

Journalists need to hone their ability to assess and evaluate data from AI, while maintaining professional ethics to ensure accurate and objective information.

“AI is a useful tool, but it cannot replace the role of journalists. Mastering technology and using AI properly will help journalists improve the quality of their work, while maintaining creativity and emotion in their articles. Don’t rely on AI, let it become a powerful assistant, helping journalists develop more and more in the digital age,” said journalist Nguyen Thanh Hieu.
