Secondary criteria are applied in cases where many candidates have the same admission score at the end of the list. These are candidates who have just met the admission standard, but if they are all admitted, it will lead to exceeding the allowed quota. To limit the number of successful candidates, each school will set different secondary criteria.
Most universities will use the rule of giving priority to higher wishes. That is, with the same admission score, the candidate who has a higher wish will be admitted first.
Universities of Technology , Law University , University of Natural Sciences (National University), Hanoi Open University , Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology , University of Transport ... apply the above sub-criteria.
Another group of schools set a secondary criterion for the high school graduation math exam score. When there are many candidates with the same final score on the list, the candidate with the higher high school graduation math score will pass first.
This number includes Hanoi University of Science and Technology , Foreign Trade University , and University of Commerce . In case the math score still exceeds the quota, the schools will consider the order of priority wishes.

At Hanoi University , when many candidates at the end of the list have the same total admission score and the same level of wishes, the school applies the following secondary criteria in order of priority: foreign language score, literature/physics/computer science score and math score.
Hanoi National University of Education uses the secondary criterion of the total average score of grades 10, 11 and 12 of the subject group according to the regulations of each major.
The Academy of Journalism and Communication divides the criteria into 2 groups. For majors with major subjects multiplied by coefficients, priority is given to candidates whose original total score of 3 subjects without coefficients, without priority points, without incentive points, and without rounding is higher.
For the remaining majors and majors, the school gives priority to candidates with higher high school math exam results.
At the Academy of Finance , additional criteria apply to each admission method. For the talent admission method, the additional criterion is the average score of grade 12.
With the method of considering high school graduation exam scores, the secondary criterion is math score.
With the combined admission method, the school takes the score of subject 1 as a secondary criterion and considers from high to low.
Similarly, the School of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Arts also has different sub-criteria for each training group. The management group uses the order of preferences and the math scores of the high school graduation exam to consider when there are many candidates with the same standard score at the end of the list.
For the art group, the candidate with the higher aptitude test score will be considered.
Candidates need to clearly understand the secondary criteria of each school to understand their chances of admission.
According to the schedule of the Ministry of Education and Training , universities can announce the benchmark scores from the afternoon of August 20 and the first round of admission results must be announced no later than 5:00 p.m. on August 22.
In 2025, the general admission system recorded more than 7.6 million registered wishes, accounting for more than 73% of the total number of candidates. On average, each candidate selected nearly 9 wishes.
