Boca Juniors drew 2-2 with Benfica in their opening match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. However, the Argentine side suffered a major setback as they received two red cards in that match. Notably, both players were heavily fined.

Former Man Utd midfielder Ander Herrera was injured and had to leave the field in the 20th minute. Before the end of the first half, while sitting on the bench, he tried to get past the security forces and approach referee Cesar Arturo Ramos while he was watching the VAR screen (in the situation of determining a penalty for Benfica).
Finally, the Spanish midfielder was shown a red card by referee Ramos. Not stopping there, FIFA decided to suspend Ander Herrera for 4 matches for his excessive behavior.
Meanwhile, Nicolas Figal also received a four-match ban after a dangerous foul on Florentino Luis in the 88th minute.
Boca Juniors were unhappy with FIFA's decision, especially since Benfica striker Andrea Belotti only received a two-match suspension for kicking the ball into Ayrton Costa's head. The Argentine club has therefore filed an appeal.
They are hoping that FIFA will reduce Nicolas Figal's ban, which could see him qualify for the knockout stages. If the ban is upheld, Boca Juniors will be without Ander Herrera and Nicolas Figal until the semi-finals (if they progress further in the tournament).

Ander Herrera only joined Boca Juniors in January on a free transfer from Bilbao. At 35 years old, the midfielder has been plagued by injuries. In March this year, he suffered a serious injury and burst into tears on the pitch.
Up to this point, the former Man Utd and PSG midfielder has only played 9 matches for Boca Juniors and has not made any significant contributions.
In the second match of the FIFA Club World Cup, Boca Juniors will face Bayern Munich at 8am on June 21.
