Many people cannot live without a cup of coffee in the morning. In addition to providing an abundant source of energy right after waking up, coffee also brings countless health benefits.

However, drinking coffee every day is not without risks. Your morning cup of joe has many effects on your body, most notably when it comes to blood pressure, explains Jamie Johnson, RD, a member of the American College of Physicians. Coffee can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure in both people with and without high blood pressure, according to Verywell Health.

Why does coffee raise blood pressure?

High blood pressure is common but can be serious if left untreated. There are a number of factors that can increase blood pressure, such as diet, alcohol consumption and smoking. Coffee in particular can also have this effect, for the following reasons:

Drinking coffee increases brain and nervous system activity. Within 30 minutes to 2 hours of drinking, coffee can affect blood vessels and the heart.

Coffee also narrows arteries and veins, thereby increasing blood pressure.

Coffee can also activate the sympathetic nervous system response, increasing heart rate and blood pressure after drinking.

Factors influencing the effects of coffee on blood pressure

The effect of coffee on blood pressure is influenced by the following factors:

Nicotine in coffee speeds up metabolism and increases the effects of caffeine on blood pressure, according to Verywell Health.

Age. Caffeine affects younger people more than older people. Studies show that coffee raises blood pressure more in teenagers than in adults.

Gender. Some studies show that men metabolize caffeine faster than women.

Types and methods of brewing coffee . The strength of different coffee beans and brewing methods (e.g. filter coffee vs. espresso) can vary.

Tolerance . After about 15 days of daily use, the effects of caffeine will gradually decrease.

Heart disease. For people with heart disease, the temporary increase in blood pressure caused by caffeine may be more pronounced.

Is it safe for people with high blood pressure to drink coffee?

Although coffee causes a temporary increase in blood pressure, it does not increase the risk of chronic high blood pressure. Therefore, people with high blood pressure can still drink coffee.

Experts advise people with very high blood pressure to pay attention to their caffeine intake. Research shows that people with stage 2 and higher high blood pressure (blood pressure readings of 140/90 or higher) who drink an additional 1-2 cups of coffee a day double their risk of cardiovascular disease. However, people with stage 1 high blood pressure (blood pressure readings below 140/90) do not experience this effect.

Notably, for healthy people who drink coffee regularly, 1-3 cups a day may have cardiovascular benefits. A Brazilian study of 8,780 people aged 35 to 74 found that moderate coffee drinking was associated with a lower risk of high blood pressure, according to Verywell Health.

Health authorities say drinking up to three cups of coffee a day is safe for most healthy people.
