Let summer become your child's growing journey

(Chinhphu.vn) - From February 14, 2025, Circular 29/2024/TT-BGDDT officially took effect, which stipulates that no extra classes will be held during the summer. Many parents across the country are worried that their children will "fall behind", especially senior students. However, according to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thanh Nam, Vice Principal of the University of Education (VNU), instead of being afraid, parents need to change their mindset: Summer vacation is an opportunity for children to mature, not a disguised "make-up" period.

Summer vacation is an opportunity for children to restore energy and develop more comprehensively.

Is the fear of falling behind just an illusion?

Many parents have expressed concern that stopping extra tutoring during the summer will cause their children to "fall behind". However, according to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thanh Nam, this is a recurring concern every year and mostly stems from the fear that their children will be inferior to their friends rather than from the actual needs of the students.

"In fact, this summer there are still many skill classes that parents can register for their children. In addition, many universities have collaborated with edtech businesses to develop free online learning systems, supporting students to self-study and review at home effectively," said Mr. Nam.

A typical example is the free summer school program jointly developed by the Universityof Education and Ademy.vn - providing Math and Natural Science lessons for students from grades 6 to 9, designed in a concise manner (only 20 minutes), integrating practical situations, gamification to create excitement and reduce learning pressure.

The important thing, according to Mr. Nam, is that parents need to be guided in making a reasonable summer plan for their children, knowing how to balance learning - playing - exercise - emotions - skills, while taking advantage of technology to monitor learning progress and support their children to study at home proactively.

Giving children the opportunity to explore art will help foster confidence and emotional development.

There are no lazy children, only bad planning.

After a stressful school year, it is understandable that children just want to play. But without a specific plan, children will fall into a passive lifestyle, dependent on electronic devices. “Parents should not impose, but need to plan a summer with their children. Children will be more motivated if they can choose the activities they like,” Mr. Nam emphasized.

A reasonable activity framework must have a balance between physical – emotional – intellectual – responsibility. For example, parents can group activities such as: sports , music lessons, reading, housework, online learning, picnics, etc. for children to take turns doing every week. At the same time, set clear rules about the time of using technology devices – so that the whole family can “escape” from screen dependence.

The market for summer language and skills courses is currently very vibrant, with all kinds of promotions: “learning while playing”, “soft skills training”, “international summer camp”. However, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thanh Nam warns: parents need to be alert, should not choose classes like booking a vacation tour.

When exercising regularly, children are not only healthy but also gradually develop self-confidence.

“Children only truly develop when they are involved in activities that are uncomfortable, require effort and problem solving. The experience cannot be too luxurious but still cultivates character,” he emphasized.

He also proposed that professional agencies soon develop a set of criteria to evaluate the quality of skills courses - based on educational objectives, age suitability, teacher capacity, pedagogical methods, financial transparency and output results.

For seniors, don't turn summer into semester 3.

For students in grades 9 and 12 – the group that has to enter the important transition exam – the pressure to study is always higher. However, Mr. Nam believes that “summer exam review” does not mean “plowing” like a third semester.

“Summer review needs to be gentle but persistent, interspersed with rest, sports, art, and intellectual games to keep the spirit fresh. AI or online learning platforms can also effectively support knowledge mapping, filling in gaps, and self-practice,” he shared.

The most important thing, according to him, is to ensure a balance between studying and resting. If you study too much but your spirit is exhausted, the results will not be as expected.

Summer is the season for children to grow – both physically and mentally.

Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thanh Nam believes that a proper summer vacation must be designed based on two principles: balance and flexibility.

“Balance between intellect and emotion, between body and soul, between learning tasks and personal interests. Each week there should be a group of activities that cover all four elements: physical, emotional, social and cognitive – and should be flexible to create excitement for children,” he said.

It is important that parents do not stand aside from their children’s summer vacation, but accompany them – from planning, choosing activities, to controlling the use of technology devices. That is the way to make each summer day a step towards maturity for children – not a day that passes by meaninglessly.
