Each candidate taking the entrance exam for grade 10 of a public high school in Hanoi will have a maximum of 3 choices. However, the order of choices greatly affects the student's admission results.
Choose the right school by area
This school year, Hanoi has about 127,000 junior high school graduates, down nearly 6,000 compared to last year. The total quota for public schools is 79,000. Thus, the rate of students passing the public high school entrance exam is more than 60%.
This year, each candidate can register to apply to a maximum of 3 public high schools, ranked in order of preference 1, 2 and 3. This is a regulation that has been applied by Hanoi city for many years, to ensure that students have a variety of choices and many opportunities to pass the 10th grade entrance exam.
In the 2025-2026 school year, Hanoi will continue to divide districts, towns, and cities into 12 enrollment areas. The division of enrollment areas aims to ensure the most favorable conditions in terms of administrative boundaries, helping students not have to travel too far to go to school.
Arranging the right order of preferences greatly affects the student's admission results. Therefore, how to place preferences to increase the chance of admission is a question of interest to parents and students.
Mr. Nghiem Van Binh, Deputy Head of the Examination Management andEducation Quality Assessment Department (Hanoi Department of Education and Training) noted that candidates choosing their first and second choices must be in the prescribed admission areas; their third choice can be in any admission area. Students who are admitted to their first choice will not be considered for their second and third choices.
According to the admission principles of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, students who do not pass their first choice can be considered for their second choice, but must have an admission score at least 1 point higher than the admission standard score for their first choice of the school they registered for their second choice.
Students who are not admitted to their first and second choices can be considered for their third choice, but must have an admission score at least 2 points higher than the admission standard score for their first choice of the school they registered for their third choice.
No changes to wishes after registration
The 10th grade entrance exam for public high schools in Hanoi for the 2025-2026 school year will take place on June 7 and 8 with three subjects: Math, Literature and Foreign Language.
According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, to ensure the best chance of admission, students need to pay attention to how to arrange their preferences, in which the first preference should be a school with a benchmark score that matches their abilities and interests. The second preference should be a school with a benchmark score about 3 points lower than the benchmark score of the first choice school. Note that these two schools must be in the same enrollment area.
With the third choice, students can choose a school in any enrollment area and a school with a benchmark score at least 3 points lower than the benchmark score of the second choice school to ensure safety.
According to Principal of Chuong Duong Secondary School (Hoan Kiem District) Nguyen Thi Van Hong, students need to remember the regulation that they cannot change their wishes after registering their wishes.
Ms. Hong also noted that parents and students, with the schools as their third choice, need to carefully research the area and calculate the travel distance to see if it is suitable for having to go to school every day for 3 consecutive years.
In addition, students need to pay attention to the change in the way the admission score is calculated. Instead of multiplying the coefficient by 2 for Math and Literature as in previous years, this year, the total admission score for grade 10 is calculated by the sum of the scores of the three exams on a 10.0 scale, without multiplying the coefficient.
This method of scoring requires students to study all subjects equally, without placing more emphasis or less on any subject than another.
The coefficient of 2 is only applied to specialized subjects when students apply to 4 specialized high schools in the city: Hanoi - Amsterdam, Chu Van An, Nguyen Hue and Son Tay.
Regarding the exam, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong said that the entrance exam for grade 10 of non-specialized public high schools for the 2025-2026 school year includes questions that are appropriate to the requirements of the subject and the goals of the secondary school level under the 2018 General Education Program, mainly in the grade 9 program.
Specific enrollment targets for each school are expected to be announced in April 2025.
Mr. Cuong affirmed that Hanoi ensures that 100% of junior high school graduates who wish to continue their studies are admitted to high schools, vocational education - continuing education centers and vocational education facilities.
