OCOP product owners in the Mekong Delta are busy preparing for the Tet market, while maintaining the selling prices of some specialties as a way to thank consumers at the end of the year.
These days, at OCOP specialty stores (Program “One Commune One Product”) in Rach Gia City, Kien Giang Province, consumers are bustling to choose dried shrimp, dried fish, soursop tea, Phu Quoc fish sauce, ST25 rice, etc. OCOP products are also packaged into eye-catching gift baskets to give as gifts during Tet.
Consumer trust
Mr. Tran Thanh, owner of an OCOP product store in Kien Giang, said that most of the products are rated by customers as high quality, safe, luxuriously packaged but reasonably priced and stable. His store has many Tet gift packages with prices ranging from 400,000 to 2 million VND, suitable for the needs of many customers.
To prepare high-quality products for sale during Tet, Mr. Ngo Thanh Khuong, owner of an ST25 rice business in Kien Giang, has cooperated with people in An Bien district to grow about 2,000 hectares on shrimp-rice land. “During Tet, the rice market was not as expected. However, our ST25 rice products grown on shrimp-rice land are mainly used as Tet gifts, so they are consumed quite quickly even though the price has increased by more than VND5,000 compared to normal days. Up to now, we have sold about 80% of the 500 tons of rice reserved for Tet,” he said.
According to Ms. Le Thi Kim Thoa, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors and Director of Hieu Phat Agricultural Service Cooperative (Phong Dong Commune, Vinh Thuan District, Kien Giang Province), on the occasion of the Lunar New Year, the Cooperative received orders for 500 "Bean - Snakehead - Pineapple" gift baskets from customers inside and outside the province. The gift baskets include whole dried shrimp, pickled onions, a box of beans, snakehead fish, dried chicken and dried pineapple; priced at about 600,000 VND. "The products in this gift package all meet OCOP standards of 3 stars or higher" - she affirmed.
Mr. Do Tran Thinh, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Kien Giang province, commented that using OCOP products as Tet gift baskets is a good way. Not only luxurious and suitable for customers' tastes, using OCOP products as Tet gift baskets also helps rural people develop their economy and stabilize their lives.
Ms. Truong Ngoc Giau, Director of Ngoc Giau Seafood Production and Trading Company Limited (Ca Mau province), boasted that this Tet, the company's OCOP specialties are distributed in many provinces and cities as gifts, and are highly appreciated by customers. To be known and trusted by consumers, in addition to focusing on product quality, the company also spends more than 100 million VND on packaging design; flexibly combining traditional sales forms with business via social networks.
Ms. Giau said: “The company’s OCOP specialties sold on the market during Tet increased by 15% - 20% compared to normal days. Many of our products serving the Tet market were sold out half a month ago. Because many customers ordered more, the company is working at full capacity to have enough supply.”
In Can Tho City, the facility “My Western Specialties” specializing in selling startup products and OCOP specialties of the Mekong Delta region has also been very popular in recent days. “The facility’s products are very diverse, such as: dried mudskippers, Chinese sausages, boneless fish cakes, banh tet, dried frogs, etc. During Tet, we mainly make gift baskets according to customers’ requests to give as gifts with prices ranging from 500,000 VND to 2 million VND/basket. It is expected that the number of products sold during this Tet holiday will increase by more than 50% compared to normal days,” said Mr. Truong Hoa Hoi, the facility’s owner, confidently.

Quality increases, price remains the same
According to Mr. Van Huu Tai - residing in Tan Hanh commune, Long Ho district, Vinh Long province - this Lunar New Year, many customers ordered algae powder capsules and algae-related products produced by his facility for their own use or as gifts. This algae powder capsule product has been recognized as meeting 3-star OCOP standards, contains many nutrients, so it is increasingly attracting the attention of consumers.
“This year, the economy has gradually recovered, so the purchasing power in the market is better than last year. However, I still keep the prices stable as usual, for example, seaweed powder is 370,000 VND/box of 12 tablets, fresh seaweed is 400,000 VND/500 gram bag, dried seaweed bread is 45,000 VND/75 gram bag” – Mr. Tai informed.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Thuan, Director of the Can Tho Urban Agricultural Service Cooperative, said that this Tet holiday, the cooperative supports the sale of OCOP products from production facilities in the city and some provinces in the Mekong Delta. Among them, many products made from cordyceps, fish sauce, soursop tea, pheasant eggs, etc. are very popular.
Mr. Thuan acknowledged: “As Tet approaches, the demand for purchasing goods is increasing. Among them, many orders are placed for linh fish sauce, sac fish sauce, and chot fish sauce. It is noteworthy that this year, although OCOP entities have increased product quality, they have not increased prices to stimulate consumption.”
Many OCOP specialty stores in Ca Mau also confirmed that although the market prices for Tet have fluctuated a lot, they still keep the selling prices the same as a way to show gratitude to customers at the end of the year. Mr. Nguyen Van Deo, the owner of a store in Ca Mau City, said: “We keep the selling prices the same as usual, so the profit is lower, but in return, we receive a lot of support from customers. This year, the amount of OCOP goods that our establishment sells is more than last year's Tet.”

“Ca Mau commits to continue creating favorable conditions for businesses and partners to access OCOP products and local specialties conveniently and easily. Thereby, aiming for sustainable profits in economic development” – Mr. Su emphasized.
