In recent years, cooperation between Vietnam and China in building "smart border gates" has become an important highlight, contributing to removing bottlenecks in the circulation of goods, especially agricultural products.
This is not only a practical step to promote bilateral trade but also demonstrates the determination of the two countries in modernizing border management, in line with the trend of comprehensive and extensive development.
According to a VNA reporter in China, in late 2021 and early 2022, a series of trucks carrying Vietnamese fruits and vegetables were congested at border gates to China, causing great damage to farmers.
Faced with this situation, the two countries’ senior leaders have had many phone calls and direct discussions to find solutions. Among them, building smart border gates is one of the important measures to resolve the above situation.
Recent practice shows that at the Huu Nghi Quan border gate, Guangxi (China), the customs clearance process has changed fundamentally. If previously it took 3-5 days for a trip to complete the procedure, now it only takes about 15 seconds. The barcode scanning, facial recognition, and fingerprinting systems have been deployed synchronously, allowing drivers to quickly complete the entry process.
In particular, fruits with a short shelf life such as durian, a popular commodity in China, can now be transported across borders without worrying about damage due to delays.
Since 2023, Huu Nghi Quan Customs has put into operation a smart quarantine system, helping Vietnam and China digitize the entire coordination process. Waiting time for each vehicle has been reduced by an average of 3.5 hours, while minimizing loading and unloading in transit.
In 2024 alone, the number of vehicles passing through Vietnam-China border gates will reach a record 3,300 vehicles/day, double that of 2019.
Another highlight is the application of advanced science and technology. Accordingly, unmanned trucks, smart cranes, 5G technology and Beidou positioning systems have been deployed, helping to automate the operation process at the border gate, moving towards 24/7 operation.
This is China's first cross-border smart gate model, which has brought practical results and is continuing to be expanded.
The two countries' joint promotion of cooperation in reform and improvement of border gate management capacity not only shortens customs clearance time but also creates a foundation for promoting stable and sustainable bilateral trade cooperation.
Since September 2022, when fresh Vietnamese durian is officially allowed to be exported to China, Vietnam has quickly emerged as an important source of supply.
In 2024, of the total 1.56 million tons of durian imported by China, nearly half will come from Vietnam. This is a vivid demonstration of the effectiveness of the smart border gate model in bringing Vietnamese agricultural products closer to Chinese consumers.
The construction and operation of smart border gates not only solves immediate difficulties for farmers and import-export enterprises, but also has strategic significance, opening up a large development space for Vietnam-China border trade.
This is a direct result of the close attention and direction of the senior leaders of the two Parties and two States, demonstrating the spirit of friendly neighborly cooperation, mutual benefit and mutual development.
In an interview with a VNA reporter in China, Mr. Zhu Houdong, Deputy Commander of the China-Vietnam Friendship Goods Transport Corridor Smart Port Construction Project, said that the purpose of building a smart border gate is to achieve the goal of fast customs clearance of goods, ensuring that goods transported from Nanning to Hanoi and vice versa are carried out within 24 hours, in order to ensure maximum stability of the supply chain and production chain of goods between the two countries.
In the coming time, based on the existing infrastructure, we expect to double the current customs clearance capacity.
Smart border gates will contribute to creating favorable conditions for Vietnam to promote digital transformation, improve the competitiveness of the logistics industry and international trade.
The two countries' cooperation in modernizing border gates shows a common strategic vision, not only promoting trade, but also strengthening political trust, creating a stable and peaceful environment in the border area, contributing to the development of the traditional Vietnam-China friendship in an increasingly deep, substantive and effective manner./.
