Seizing this opportunity, a number of enterprises and cooperatives in Gia Lai province have planned to invest in factories, machinery, and cold storage to produce frozen durian.

Mr. Nguyen Chat Sam - Director of Sam Phat Ia Ly Farmstay Co., Ltd. (Chu Pah district) said: Before forming a durian specialized growing area, through connections, he was visited by the Quadrangle Group of Malaysia (specializing in frozen durian for export to other countries) to survey and advise on choosing the Musang King durian variety to plant. According to expert advice, this durian variety currently has low yield, high selling price and is favored by importing countries.

“This is the first year that the 12-hectare Musang King durian garden of Sam Phat Ia Ly Farmstay has yielded a harvest with an estimated yield of nearly 50 tons. Although this is the first year of harvest, it has been highly appreciated by customers. From 2025 onwards, the durian garden will yield over 100 tons of fruit and will continue to increase its annual yield. At the same time, the quality of the fruit will also be better than during the harvest period.
At the time I started growing Musang King durian, many key growing areas across the country were still rarely growing this variety. Therefore, this is a price advantage for fresh and frozen Musang King durian in the next few years," Mr. Sam commented.
According to Mr. Sam, right from the beginning of planting this durian garden, he has oriented production according to export standards. He is completing procedures to establish a growing area code on the existing area, and at the same time oriented to link production and product consumption with surrounding gardens to have a large output.
Recently, Vietnam signed a protocol on official export of frozen durian to China. This is good news for durian farmers in the area. Taking advantage of this opportunity, next season, Mr. Sam plans to invest in a freezing workshop of about 500 m2 to produce frozen goods and build a durian brand as well as direct export orientation.
Meanwhile, Mr. Le Van Thanh - Director of Ia Mo Nong Agricultural Production, Trade, Service and Tourism Cooperative (Chu Pah District) shared: "Currently, the Cooperative has 2 cold storages but so far they only produce passion fruit. According to the plan, the Cooperative will invest in building 2-3 more cold storages to deploy the production of frozen durian in the next crop.
Along with investing in cold storage, the cooperative is building a project to link sustainable durian production, following technical processes, building certification standards, ensuring consistent quality and sufficient output to directly export fresh fruit as well as seize opportunities to export frozen goods.

In recent years, the area of durian has increased rapidly, so the future supply will be very abundant. If only fresh fruit is exported, the output is expected to be difficult, but when frozen goods are exported, freezing will help durian to be preserved for a long time and can wait for a good price to sell. This is a favorable factor for farmers to feel secure in production, and businesses and cooperatives are bold in investing in factories and cold storage for processing.
Mr. Nguyen Van Lap - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Minh Phat Farms Cooperative (Chu Prong District) said: The cooperative has 25 members growing 30 hectares of durian according to VietGAP standards. This entire area has been assigned a growing area code since 2022. Signing a cooperation agreement with Krong Pak Green Agriculture Cooperative ( Dak Lak Province) to consume fresh fruit, frozen peeled products and processed durian pulp products is a solution for the cooperative to sustainably develop the durian industry. Being able to export frozen durian to China helps stabilize product output.
According to the cooperation orientation, in 2025, Krong Pak Green Agriculture Cooperative will move a cold storage to Chu Prong district to facilitate the production of frozen goods on site.
Prospects for increased exports
In 2019, the whole province had more than 1,369 hectares of pure durian and intercropped durian, of which 337.7 hectares were for harvest. By 2024, the whole province had about 5,800 hectares of durian, of which the business area was about 3,000 hectares, mainly grown in the districts of Chu Prong, Duc Co, Mang Yang, Chu Puh, Ia Grai, Chu Pah, Chu Se, Dak Doa, etc.
The durian variety structure includes: Dona, Monthong, Ri6, Musang King. Durian yield is stable when the tree is 8 years old or older and reaches an average of 30 tons/ha/year for pure durian, intensive investment according to the correct process.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Doan Ngoc Co: Since Vietnam's durian products were officially exported to China, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has focused on promoting and guiding local people, cooperatives, and businesses to grasp production standards.
Currently, Gia Lai has been granted 54 durian growing area codes with a total area of 1,281 hectares. The whole province also has 38 packing facility codes with a total capacity of about 1,700 tons of fresh fruit/day, mainly fruit exported to countries: China, Australia, New Zealand, the United States...
According to the orientation to 2030, the durian area of the province will develop stably at about 6,000 hectares, focusing on high-quality varieties. For pure planting areas, a growing area code will be established for every 10 hectares, and standards such as GlobalGAP will be established for this industry to orient exports.
“Currently, Vietnam’s durian industry has an advantage in export. The export turnover of this industry this year is estimated at about 3.5 billion USD. The official export of frozen durian to China is good news for Gia Lai’s durian industry.
To develop this industry, it is necessary to promote the development of logistics systems, warehouses, cold storage, and transportation. This is an extremely necessary condition to reduce input costs and increase the competitiveness of durian products, especially frozen products.
The production of frozen durian will not only be exported to China but also open up great opportunities to bring the product to the markets of several other countries. At the same time, durian can be processed into a number of other products such as dried durian, cakes, candies..." - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development added.
