Once thought that there was only one red Opel GT appearing in Vietnam, suddenly "Qua" Vu drove another silver car, making the classic car enthusiasts admire the "king of Vietnamese coffee"'s willingness to spend money and hunt for unique car models. This also caused the owner of the red Opel GT to speak up and clarify that he was not selling the car, because many people asked why he sold it so quickly. The GT is a two-seat, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car, produced and marketed by Opel through two generations, 34 years apart.
The first generation Opel GT was produced from 1968–1973, debuting as a styling exercise in 1965 at the Paris and Frankfurt motor shows. The production car used mechanical components from the contemporary Opel Kadett B and a two-door hardtop body by French contractor Brissonneau & Lotz. The Opel GT was powered by a 1.1-liter inline-four OHV engine that produced 67 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. However, most buyers opted for the optional 1.9-liter overhead camshaft engine that produced 102 horsepower at 5,200 to 5,400 rpm. The Opel GT has a steel monocoque chassis, front mid-engine, rear-wheel drive. The engine is mounted deep in the chassis to improve weight distribution. The front suspension consists of upper A-arms and lower transverse leaf springs. The rear suspension uses a drive shaft and coil springs. The electric power-assisted braking system uses front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The steering system is powerless.
Another distinctive feature of the Opel GT is the hidden headlamps. They are operated manually by a large lever along the center console, next to the gear lever. Unlike the pop-up headlights, they both rotate in the same direction (counterclockwise from inside the car) around a vertical axis. Designed by Opel designer Erhard Schnell, the GT is a fastback, with no outward-opening trunk or conventional rear doors. There is a luggage rack behind the seats, which can only be accessed through the main doors. Behind the luggage rack is a folding panel to store the spare tire and jack. A total of 103,463 were sold between 1968 and 1973, including the first few hundred hand-built in 1968 and 1968–1970 models with the 1.1-litre engine, for a total of 3,573. Of the later GTs, 10,760 were the cheaper GT/J version.
In some markets, equipment such as a limited-slip differential, front and rear anti-roll bars, heated rear windows and engine compartment lighting are standard, although most vehicles delivered do not have these features. Video : Introducing the 1968 Opel GT classic car.
