Forest fire near cemetery

VnExpressVnExpress27/08/2023

Nghe An More than 4 hectares of production forest near the cemetery in Nam Dan district burned down, authorities suspect it was caused by incense ash flying in.

The forest fire in Hamlet 7, Nam Kim Commune, Nam Dan District broke out on the night of August 26. It was brought under control after a few hours, but flared up again the next morning. This forest, which is over 4 hectares wide and consists of eucalyptus and acacia trees, was assigned by the State to the people for exploitation.

More than 100 soldiers and local militia were mobilized to set up a firebreak. Due to the steep, rugged terrain of the forest, with many dense vegetation and bushes, and strong southwest winds, the fire spread quickly, making firefighting difficult. By noon on August 27, the fire was under control, with more than 4 hectares of forest burned down.

That same evening, Mr. Nguyen Hong Son, Chairman of Nam Dan District, said that the forest that caught fire was a few meters away from the cemetery, and that it was near the full moon of the seventh lunar month, so many people came to burn incense. Authorities suspect that the incense ash was blown into the forest by the wind, causing the fire.

"The district is directing the police to determine the specific cause, review and work with relevant people to come up with a solution," said Mr. Son.

Half a month ago, more than 400 people including forest rangers, police, soldiers and local militia also spent 8 hours extinguishing a fire in 3 hectares of forest in Nam Dan district.

Nghe An has been experiencing prolonged heat recently, with temperatures ranging from 35-38 degrees Celsius to over 40 degrees Celsius in many places. The southwest wind is blowing strongly, and the humidity in the air is low.
