The story of 2024 Olympic TV copyright in Southeast Asia

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí02/08/2024

(Dan Tri) - According to the announcement of the Organizing Committee (OC) of the 2024 Paris Olympics, 9 countries in Southeast Asia own the broadcasting rights for programs related to this year's Olympics.

Southeast Asian countries own broadcasting rights for 2024 Olympics

Nine countries own the broadcasting rights to the 2024 Paris Olympics in Southeast Asia, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Timor Leste. Only two countries in this region do not own the broadcasting rights to this year's Summer Olympics, namely Vietnam and Laos. The way Southeast Asian countries own the broadcasting rights to the Olympics is not the same. Some countries have only one station buying the entire copyright, but others will have multiple stations sharing the broadcasting rights in their country's territory. Radio Television Brunei bought all the broadcasting rights to the Olympics in this country. Similarly, in Cambodia, the broadcasting rights belong to CNT (Cambodian Television Network).

The way to buy Olympic broadcasting rights in Southeast Asian countries is also different. Most places buy directly from the distributor of the Paris 2024 Olympic broadcasting rights, except for Cambodia's CNT, which bought a pass-through package from CBS. For Timor Leste, they use the simplest package, just watching TV on Olympics.com. Meanwhile, in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, many different broadcasters share the broadcasting rights to the Paris 2024 Olympics (which means sharing the copyright purchase price).

Some countries buy copyrights directly from the distribution unit authorized by the Paris Olympics, while others buy them from other stations and hold the distribution rights (Photo: Reuters).

In Malaysia, three separate television stations, Astro, Unifi TV and RTM, have jointly purchased the broadcasting rights for the Olympics held in France. The broadcasting time, the way of exploiting accompanying programs and advertising for brands from these stations are divided according to their contribution to the copyright package. Similarly, in the Philippines, there are also three stations jointly purchasing the broadcasting rights, including Cignal TV, PLDT and Smart. They will also have an agreement to divide the broadcasting rights and broadcasting scope on different platforms (TV, mobile devices, etc.) depending on the level of contribution and the strengths of each station.

Public and private combination

In Thailand alone, a country with a highly developed pay TV sector, there are 6 different stations (AIS, TrueVision, T Sport 7, MCOT, 7HD and PPTV) that jointly own the broadcasting rights for the 2024 Paris Olympics, with financial support from the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT).

These stations belong to the Pay TV Association in the Land of the Golden Pagodas. Before the Olympics, they had many discussions with each other, before reaching an agreement to jointly purchase the copyright. In Myanmar and Singapore, although there is only one unit that stands up to buy the broadcasting copyright in each country. The large corporations of each of the above countries stand up to buy, then they transfer it to state units, according to demand. In Myanmar, the private economic group Forever Group stands up to buy the broadcasting copyright for the 2024 Paris Olympics, then they share it with the national station and local stations in need (of course, after these stations reach an agreement with Forever Group).

In Singapore, the media giant Mediacorp bought the rights. Unlike Forever Group in Myanmar, Mediacorp is a media group owned by the Singapore government , so sharing broadcasting rights across the entire territory of the lion island will be simpler.

Olympic broadcasting rights prices are much lower than World Cup

Currently, there is very little information about the purchase price of Olympic broadcasting rights from Southeast Asian countries. However, this price may not be too high, because the total price of the Paris 2024 Olympic broadcasting rights is only 750 million euros (about 20,500 billion VND), for about 200 countries and territories around the world . This figure is much lower than the billions of euros of broadcasting rights for the World Cup or Euro finals. The lower selling price, the higher the purchase price will likely be.

Of course, it is also possible that populous countries with great economic potential in Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, will have to buy more broadcasting rights for the 2024 Paris Olympics than countries with fewer people and weaker economic potential, such as Brunei, Timor Leste, or Cambodia (this division is similar to the division of television rights at the World Cup and Euro). One of the few countries that has announced the amount of money spent to buy broadcasting rights for the 2024 Paris Olympics in Southeast Asia is Thailand. In Thailand, the price of the Olympic broadcasting rights was purchased for 400 million baht (about 284 billion VND, or more than 11.2 million USD). This price is much lower than the amount of nearly 1,000 billion VND that Thailand spent to own the broadcasting rights for the 2022 World Cup, which once caused a stir in Southeast Asia. As analyzed, the market in Thailand is very large, rich in potential with nearly 70 million people who are getting rich quite quickly. This market is potential not only because of the large number of TV viewers, but also because it is easy to sell advertisements, easily attracting brands to insert advertisements between broadcast times of Olympic competitions.

Indonesia has not yet announced the amount of money spent to buy the broadcasting rights for this year's Olympics, but it is certain that the amount will be much lower than the amount of more than 1,100 billion VND that they spent to buy the broadcasting rights for the 2022 World Cup (Indonesia has a population of 280 million, an economy with a GDP in the top 20 in the world). In Vietnam, there was information that the partner offered to sell the Olympic broadcasting rights to a domestic sports copyright company for tens of millions of USD (about 250 billion VND), but the domestic company considered this fee expensive, so they did not buy it. In addition, unlike football in the World Cup or Euro, some TV stations in Vietnam are also concerned that the appeal of most Olympic sports is not high for Vietnamese audiences.
