Warning of scams taking advantage of superstition, offering prayers to ward off bad luck, and calling for charity

According to the investigation agency, on the occasion of the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024, the demand for visiting places of worship, spiritual places, participating in religious events and activities of people and tourists increased. These are religious activities of people to pray for health and fortune.

However, the investigation agency recommends that people need to be more vigilant against scams. Especially, they need to be alert to cases of impersonating monks to call for charity and donations, taking advantage of people's superstition and ignorance to fabricate fantastic stories.

Specifically, making up stories about being under a spell, having health problems to entice people to perform rituals to ward off bad luck, perform magic... to scam.

The Investigation Police Department of Da Nang City Police recommends that people should be vigilant, not believe or listen to those who practice superstition. When having health problems, they should go to medical facilities for treatment, to avoid becoming victims of property fraud.

Defendant Dinh Thi Hoa Hong was prosecuted and detained.

In 2023, Da Nang City Police prosecuted 2 cases, 2 female defendants swindled and appropriated property by means of offering prayers to dispel bad luck. Accordingly, defendant Dinh Thi Hoa Hong (31 years old, temporarily residing at Kim Lien 3, Hoa Hiep Bac Ward, Lien Chieu District), saw a woman who was often sick, so she lured her into offering prayers to dispel bad luck, defrauding nearly 1.5 billion VND.

The investigation agency prosecuted and detained Nguyen Thi Lieu (35 years old, residing in Hoa Phuoc commune, Hoa Vang district) for fraud. Lieu organized spirit possession, fabricated stories of spirit possession, threatened victims to make offerings, thereby defrauding 320 million VND.
