In his resignation letter to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on August 31, Mr. Wallace wrote: “The British Ministry of Defense is on its way back to being world-class with world-class people. According to the Guardian, Prime Minister Sunak praised Mr. Wallace, and affirmed that this official left office with the "thanks and respect" of the head of government .

Mr Wallace, a close ally of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, played a key role in Britain’s response to the crisis in Ukraine. In May, Britain became the first Western country to deliver long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles, as Kiev sought to bolster its campaign against Russian forces.

Last month, Mr Wallace announced that he would step down in the next Cabinet reshuffle, ending his four-year tenure as head of the UK Ministry of Defence. Prime Minister Sunak is expected to appoint a replacement for Mr Wallace later on 31 August.

According to the Daily Telegraph , Minister of State for the Armed Forces James Heappey, Permanent Secretary to the Treasury John Glen and former Defence Secretary Liam Fox are among the possible candidates to succeed Mr Wallace.
