The decision to kill the X4 comes after the launch of the second-generation BMW X2 last year. The new X2 was designed to be the perfect blend of a crossover and a coupe.
With a much larger size than its predecessor. Therefore, the BMW X4 model may be discontinued in the near future because the price and size gap between the X2 and X4 is not far away. BMW believes that maintaining both models will lead to a conflict in sales.
SUV X4 officially discontinued globally
While the decision to kill the X4 has been made, BMW has also announced that it will upgrade the X3 line to fill the gap. Unlike the X2 with front-wheel drive and an I4 engine, the X3 will continue to be equipped with rear-wheel drive and an I6 engine in the new M50 version.
While the internal combustion engine X4 will be phased out, BMW isn’t giving up on the model entirely. According to BMWBLOG, an all-electric iX4 is expected to arrive around 2027 on the Neue Klasse platform.
This is part of BMW's electric vehicle development strategy, with the goal of launching at least 6 EVs on a new dedicated platform by 2028. Along with the iX4, BMW has also confirmed that it will launch the iX3 in 2025 and the i3 sedan in 2026.
