Journalism in the Age of AI

(GLO)- It is not an exaggeration to say that we are breathing in the “digital” atmosphere every day. The strong development of science and technology in general and artificial intelligence (AI) in particular is pushing industries into a race to avoid falling behind. Journalism is no exception.

Over the past decade, the press has joined the digital flow, actively applying science and technology in general, and artificial intelligence in particular, to the stages of creating a press work, increasing interactivity, measuring attractiveness as well as surveying and synthesizing readers' needs to better serve information.

Since a few years ago, in many newspapers, readers can not only read but also listen to the news, and can even choose regional accents according to personal preferences. The application of software and algorithms to analyze and synthesize news and article reading habits in different sections has also been of interest to many editorial offices in order to personalize information and improve the experience for readers.

With the ability to synthesize and analyze information, newsrooms can flexibly use AI as a virtual assistant to analyze mainstream events, catch trends or suggest ideas, outline articles, support editing work, mark morat, even host TV shows, create a complete video or podcast...

AI can also participate in the stages of automatically mining news and articles from provided sources; collecting statistics and analyzing data such as visits, views, and assessing readers' interest levels, etc. so that editorial offices can develop long-term strategies for themselves.

In Vietnam, the pioneering newsrooms in applying AI include: Nhan Dan Newspaper, VietnamPlus, VnExpress, Lao Dong Newspaper... Some newsrooms have let AI participate in producing a complete journalistic work in the form of news aggregators.

From the perspective of local Party newspapers, Gia Lai Newspaper has also kept up quite well in the digital transformation process; initially applied tools to help shorten the editing and presentation stages; enhanced the measurement of readers' experience with articles, and increased interaction with readers.

In general, the application of AI by press agencies is actually on the right track with Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW dated December 22, 2024 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation.

That said, AI is creeping into journalism every day and every hour. It gives journalists many opportunities to improve quality and get closer to readers, but there are also many challenges. As a bridge of information to readers, journalism needs to prioritize accuracy. However, if journalists rely too much on and trust AI, they can easily lose their inherent thinking, quickness, and sharpness.

The information provided by AI is not always correct because they are programmed to provide answers in any situation to satisfy users. Therefore, no matter how little information is available and no matter how unreliable the source is, with its top-notch synthesis and analysis capabilities, this tool can still express it coherently, smoothly, and methodically. Therefore, AI can easily “manipulate”, create “fake news” and users will be easily fooled if they are not alert and do not have critical thinking.

In addition, copyright and personal information security issues when using AI to search, analyze, and synthesize information also need to be noted and carefully considered. In fact, recently, on social networks, some untrue news about images of police officers or the situation of agricultural products has been spread by bad actors using AI to cause confusion and mislead public opinion.

Therefore, it is necessary to deeply understand that, no matter how intelligent, AI is still a digital tool to support humans. Using AI effectively will help people save time and improve the quality of work. However, using AI also requires knowledge, and must be trained systematically, seriously and continuously.

Therefore, journalists must constantly update their knowledge every day and must be alert enough to use AI to serve their work effectively, avoiding relying on and completely trusting the information provided by this tool without control. In particular, each newsroom also needs to develop a set of rules and standards for applying AI in journalism, and it is necessary to set specific limits so that AI can truly be a supporting tool, helping to improve work efficiency.
