Recently, Children's Hospital 2 (HCMC) admitted 3 cases of siblings in the same family, living in Thu Duc City, HCMC, to the hospital due to progressive weakness in lower limbs, respiratory failure, suspected of botulinum toxin poisoning. According to family members, the 3 children had previously eaten pork roll of unknown origin, showing signs of spoilage. By the afternoon of the same day, the 3 children began to feel dizzy, nauseous, vomit, have stomachaches, and have diarrhea.
Dr. Truong Thi Ngoc Phu, Children's Hospital 2, noted that the symptoms of botulinum poisoning include early signs such as fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea while still conscious and without fever. When more toxins penetrate, it will cause blurred vision, dry mouth, signs of muscle paralysis such as drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing, difficulty speaking, and more seriously, paralysis of the respiratory muscles leading to respiratory failure that can be fatal if the patient does not receive timely intervention.
Do not use the product if you detect food with strange color or smell.
BAT antitoxin should be used as soon as possible after diagnosis of poisoning to help improve mortality. However, this drug is very rare, not always available, and is expensive. Therefore, supportive care is the mainstay of treatment for botulinum poisoning, especially in cases of severe respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation, which can take weeks to months to recover.
Dr. Phu recommends that parents pay special attention to hygiene when preparing fresh food, and do not use honey for children under 1 year old. For canned food, it is necessary to choose products with clear origin, safe packaging, and expiration date.
When detecting food with strange color or smell, you need to notify the seller, supplier or the authorities to intervene. Absolutely do not consume suspicious and poor quality food to ensure the health and life of yourself and your family.
