British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps has announced a £4 billion (about $4.9 billion) deal to build attack submarines.

According to Reuters, the submarine construction contract was awarded to BAE Systems and is considered part of a program implemented under the framework of the Australia-UK-US Trilateral Enhanced Security Partnership (AUKUS) to build attack submarines.

The contract will secure funding for BAE Systems’ infrastructure facility in Barrow-in-Furness, northwest England, and create 5,000 jobs. BAE Systems said production of the submarines will begin later this decade, with the first SSN-AUKUS to be delivered in the late 2030s.

Britain is pivoting its foreign and defense policy to the Indo- Pacific , and is also seeking trade deals with fast-growing economies in the region after leaving the European Union.
