Eating grapes has unexpected effects on blood cholesterol

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên26/08/2024

One of the most beneficial nutrients in grapes is polyphenol. This is an antioxidant that has the ability to fight inflammation and reduce blood cholesterol, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

The fiber and antioxidant content of grapes may help lower blood cholesterol.

The cholesterol-lowering benefits of grape polyphenols help prevent plaque buildup in the artery walls, reducing the risk of clogged arteries and heart problems. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found that polyphenols in grapes can help lower cholesterol. The researchers found that polyphenols can maintain low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, also known as "bad" cholesterol, at healthy levels.

Another nutrient in grapes that can help prevent high cholesterol is soluble fiber. The soluble fiber in grapes helps break down cholesterol. Therefore, regularly eating soluble fiber naturally found in grapes or other plants can help reduce total cholesterol in the body.

A study published in the journal PharmaNutrition found that eating grapes can significantly reduce high blood pressure and lower blood cholesterol levels. Part of this benefit is due to the fiber content in grapes.

Although grapes are not a high-fiber fruit, the fiber in grapes is essential for health, helping to control cholesterol levels. An adult is recommended to consume 25 to 30 grams per day. To get enough fiber, in addition to grapes, people need to eat other plants such as green leafy vegetables, whole grains or beans.

However, one thing to note is that although grapes are considered a heart-healthy fruit, experts recommend not eating too much. The main reason is that ripe grapes have a high sugar content.

According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), 1 cup of grapes contains nearly 24 grams of sugar. Meanwhile, the recommended amount of sugar an adult should eat per day is only 25 grams for women and 36 grams for men. Therefore, to maximize the benefits of grapes, people should only eat them in moderation, according to Healthline.
