The article "University benchmark scores 'inflate', nearly 10 points per subject still fail, what happens?" attracted many debates from Tuoi Tre Online readers regarding changes in admission policies and fairness.
University benchmarks 'inflated' due to too many admission methods?
"29 points still failed the university entrance exam, how can I study, what's the problem?" is the question asked by a reader. Perhaps this is an excellent exam score but still failed the first choice, making this reader worried. Meanwhile, reader Nguyen Tuan Loc half-jokingly said "our children are really good...".
Also talking about scores, reader Ky Tranh said that only excellent and good students can get 3 subjects with scores above 27.
With this result, if students cannot enter the university of their choice, the admission process needs to be reviewed.
Many readers explained the reasons, debated the admission and graduation exam policies as well as the fairness in admission and proposed solutions to limit the situation of "standard score inflation".
"Analyzing the score distribution announced by the Ministry of Education and Training in 2025, I see that only the math - chemistry - biology combination of the medical university group reflects the score results relative to the high school graduation exam results. Other combinations of universities and other colleges are unknown...", reader Nguyen Ha commented.
Explaining why candidates with nearly 10 points in each subject still fail their first choice, reader Nam said there are two reasons. One is that the graduation exam is too easy, with all scores being 9-10 without differentiation. Two is that the admission quota based on graduation exam scores is too small.
Many other readers agreed with the above opinion and said that the reason for the inflation of benchmark scores is that there are too many admission methods. Reader Nguyen affirmed that it is the result of university admission through academic records.
Also analyzing the cause of inflation in benchmark scores, reader Nguyen Hai Au said that admission by means of transcripts, capacity assessment,... is almost enough to cover expenses.
The method of using high school graduation exam results to consider the very limited quota leads to high scores (many students even get 1.5-2 points extra). The Ministry of Education and Training needs to review the admission methods of schools.
From another perspective, reader anhhaophilos believes that the high standard scores in some schools are due to the conversion of percentiles, but if the graduation exam combines math - physics - chemistry to achieve a score of 25 - 29, candidates must study very solidly.
Some schools such as the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) have a very high standard score for "hot" majors, with many candidates winning national or international prizes who are eligible for direct admission, so high school candidates have to compete very fiercely.
Fix rules that may cause unfairness
Besides explaining the causes, many readers also wondered and proposed solutions to limit this situation.
"High benchmark scores are mostly in pedagogical majors, which is a good thing, but there are too many things to worry about for this year's university and college admissions season. There needs to be a long-term stable solution for admissions," reader Vinh Hai wrote.
Reader Truong thinks that the high, very high admission scores are due to many admission methods. This is unfair. "In my opinion, we should only rely on the graduation exam results as the main factor, and consider secondary factors such as academic records and foreign languages," this reader suggested.
Similarly, reader Thanh suggested separating graduation and university exams. Because graduation exams are very likely to be inflated, causing university scores to be distorted.
Sometimes, going back to the time of choosing a school and major before taking the exam will help students study according to their dreams instead of applying for admission after knowing the score.
Sharing the same point of view, reader Anh Vu believes that reform is to reduce, make things simpler and more convenient, not to complicate the problem, which has many unreasonable points. I think this is the right time to separate the high school graduation exam and university and college admissions. To improve the quality of university education , it is necessary to remove the criteria for considering high school transcripts for university admission.
"Let universities set the questions and choose their products to avoid omissions," reader Vinh wished.
