Trial of the owner of the hui who defrauded over 100 billion VND

The trial is expected to last 4 days due to the large number of victims and many details that need to be clarified.

On the morning of September 16, Lam Dong Provincial People's Court opened the first instance trial of Le Thi Lai (born in 1964, residing in Tuyen Quang commune, Lam Dong province) for fraud and appropriation of more than 117 billion VND.

According to the indictment, the Hue string (a form of hui) organized by Le Thi Lai at the end of 2020 alone had 947 participants with a total of 19,043 Hue shares. Of these, 203 people had their money stolen, totaling more than 117 billion VND.

According to the indictment, since 2005, Le Thi Lai has organized hui games with many people, mainly monthly hui games. At first, the hui games were played normally, with few participants. Lai collected and paid hui money in full to the hui players, so the hui players trusted and participated in the hui games more and more.
From 2017 onwards, Le Thi Lai opened many hui chains at the same time, leading to an imbalance in collecting and paying hui money, causing losses and inability to pay, leading to having to open many new hui chains to get money from later people to pay earlier people.

The peak was in 2020, when Lai provided false information that there were many people "wearing flowers" (selling flowers) to entice players to buy back flowers at large values. There were 295 people who trusted and participated, paying a total of more than 156 billion VND. Lai only used a small part of this money to pay interest, the rest was appropriated and used for debt repayment and personal expenses. By January 2021, when he was unable to pay, the defendant fled the locality. According to the indictment, the flower chain that Le Thi Lai organized at the end of 2020 alone had 947 participants with a total of 19,043 flowers. Of which, 203 people had their money stolen, totaling more than 117 billion VND.

Regarding civil liability, 202 victims requested Le Thi Lai to compensate for the total amount of more than 116 billion VND that had been appropriated. Particularly, victim LTBH did not request Le Thi Lai to compensate for the amount of 768,400,000 VND that had been appropriated.
