Việt NamViệt Nam09/05/2024

In response to information from the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca that it is carrying out the process of requesting to withdraw the license for the COVID-19 vaccine in the remaining regions and countries around the world, the Drug Administration of Vietnam ( Ministry of Health ) said that Vietnam is no longer using this vaccine.

The previously licensed vaccines have expired. After that, AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines are no longer imported into Vietnam. Currently, only a few types of vaccines with valid expiration dates are stored for use in the prevention and control of COVID-19.

At the time of licensing in Vietnam, the COVID-19 vaccine produced by AstraZeneca had been licensed for emergency use in 181 countries and territories. This is also the type of vaccine listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization.

In Vietnam, during the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the 30 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine ordered from AstraZeneca, Vietnam also received AstraZeneca vaccines sporadically through sponsorship programs.

Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Quang Thai, Deputy Head of the Department of Infectious Disease Control, National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, said that AstraZeneca is one of the COVID-19 vaccines widely used in Vietnam.

To date, Vietnam has safely administered 74.3 million injections nationwide to people aged 18 and over. The last doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine will be administered in Vietnam before July 2023.

According to AstraZeneca, from May 7, this vaccine can no longer be used in the European Union (EU), after the company voluntarily withdrew its "business license" in this region.

AstraZeneca said the vaccine withdrawal was for commercial reasons. The company said there are now other more effective vaccines that can protect against newer SARS-CoV-2 variants. Therefore, the market demand for AstraZeneca's vaccine is no longer there.

AstraZeneca is the first COVID-19 vaccine approved for conditional import into Vietnam since February 2021. This vaccine was researched and developed by AstraZeneca Pharmaceutical Company in collaboration with Oxford University (UK)./.
