According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in recent years, the rate of use of aromatic and high-quality rice varieties has increased, meeting the requirements of the rice export market. The structure of rice varieties has tended to shift from aromatic, specialty, and glutinous varieties to high-quality varieties and the processing group has decreased compared to many previous years.
In particular, in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, the glutinous rice variety group increased slightly. In the Summer-Autumn crop, the structure of the high-quality rice variety group is estimated to increase by 27% and the specialty fragrant rice variety group will decrease, equal to 57% compared to the Winter-Spring crop, due to weather conditions more suitable for the specialty fragrant rice group than the Summer-Autumn crop. In the Autumn-Winter crop, the specialty fragrant rice variety group is lower, only equal to 67.8% of the Summer-Autumn crop and equal to 38.6% of the Winter-Spring crop, but the high-quality rice group reaches 70% higher in area.
Although there are changes in the sowing area of the two main rice varieties for export, which are the specialty fragrant rice group and the quality rice group, the two rice groups in general still meet the export demand with a rate of 86.8-93.5% of the area in the crops. The summer-autumn crop alone reaches nearly 72%, due to the use of many groups of local varieties that account for a large proportion and the group of fragrant and specialty rice reaches a high level equivalent to 40% of the total area in the region.
