On September 15, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province coordinated with An Giang Irrigation Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd. to organize the opening of Tha La and Tra Su sluices to discharge floodwaters and bring alluvium to the downstream area of the Mekong Delta.

From early morning, hundreds of local and foreign people came to Tha La and Tra Su sluices to observe the flood water flowing from upstream. Although Tha La sluices were opened at 9am, many farmers waited for the flood to come to the sluice area to observe and monitor the water flowing downstream.
Having a house next to Vinh Te canal, every year Mr. Le Van Noi (66 years old, living in Trung Bac Hung hamlet, Thoi Son ward, An Giang province) also closely follows the flood waters. Releasing the flood will help more people, rice production will be better, and fertilizer will be lighter.
"This year, I see that the flood discharge will bring alluvium to the land, and farmers will be able to catch more fish and shrimp. This year's flood discharge has more water than last year.
"Hopefully the flowing water will bring a lot of alluvium, and there will be a lot of fish and shrimp for the people," Mr. Noi said while looking at the alluvium flowing downstream.
At exactly 9 o'clock, the Tha La sluice was opened by the An Giang provincial government to let alluvial water flow from upstream to downstream.
Hundreds of people stood on Provincial Road 955A watching the muddy alluvial flow downstream to remove acidity and wash away alum in the Mekong Delta.
Mr. Luong Huy Khanh - Deputy Head of the Department of Irrigation of An Giang province - said that the water level measured at Tha La sluice at 7am was 3.18m upstream and 2.08m downstream (1.1m difference compared to downstream).
At Tra Su sluice, the upstream water level is 3.15m and the downstream is 2.05m (1.1m difference compared to the downstream).
"Compared to the same period, the water level difference in 2024 is only about 0.3m, while this year the difference between upstream and downstream is 1.1m. The water level is higher than the same period in 2024, and nothing unusual has been detected. Before releasing the flood, the unit notified people in the Long Xuyen quadrangle to monitor and respond promptly," said Mr. Khanh.
Tha La and Tra Su sluices were started to be built at the location of Tha La and Tra Su rubber spillways, on the flood prevention dike on the southern bank of Vinh Te canal, in Thoi Son ward, An Giang province. The construction was completed in 2022 and handed over to An Giang Irrigation Exploitation Company Limited for management, operation, exploitation and protection until now.
Tha La culvert is an open culvert, 66m wide, divided into 3 compartments, each compartment is 22m wide. Tra Su culvert: open culvert, 88m wide, divided into 4 compartments, each compartment is 22m wide.
The tasks of these two sluices are to regulate floods from Cambodia to the West Sea; create conditions for bringing alluvium from the Hau River to improve fields; provide water for irrigation of about 17,500 hectares of natural land in the dry season; develop waterway and road traffic; control floods in the Long Xuyen quadrangle with a natural area of 498,141 hectares in the two provinces of An Giang and Can Tho .
