Vietnam women's team carefully considers naturalization, Vietnamese football may merge teams

(NLDO) - VFF representative said that the Vietnamese women's team will carefully calculate the naturalization and use naturalized players following the trend of Southeast Asia.

On the afternoon of June 20, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) held a press conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025). This is an opportunity to express gratitude to journalists who have accompanied the country's football.

At the meeting, VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu shared his views on using foreign players and players of Vietnamese origin when regional rivals have followed this trend.

"Ho Chi Minh City women's football is taking the lead in using foreign players of Vietnamese origin. Hopefully other clubs will consider using players of Vietnamese origin," said Mr. Tu.

The VFF Vice President also said that in the near future, AFC will organize licensing for Vietnamese women's clubs and only qualified teams will be allowed to participate in the Asian tournament.

Currently, the Malaysian and Indonesian women's teams have also taken similar steps to the men's football team. Of these, Indonesia has just added a series of naturalized female players.

"The use of Vietnamese-origin and naturalized players will be carefully calculated to ensure harmony and not affect the quality of domestic tournaments," Mr. Tran Anh Tu affirmed.

Also at the meeting, the plan to organize the 2025-2026 season received much attention, especially in the context of the country merging into 34 provinces and cities.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Ngoc said: "According to the resolution of the 2024 VFF congress, V-League 2025-2026 will have 14 teams. VPF has completed the competition plan for next year's season."

Mr. Ngoc informed: "This year, with the merger of 34 provinces and cities, it is likely that some localities will have plans to merge football teams. In reality, we will grasp the situation promptly and have a plan, a competition schedule, and promotion and relegation slots to present to the authorities. Before the ball rolls, the competition organization plan will be guaranteed for the teams participating in the tournament."
