On the morning of October 18, Tan Son Nhi Primary School, Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City organized a lunch for boarding students and invited parents to join.

At the beginning of the open meal, Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hien - Vice Principal of Tan Son Nhi Primary School - shared about how to build the menu and the process of organizing the cooking of the school's boarding meals.

According to Ms. Hien, the school's lunch is based on the menu introduced by the Ho Chi Minh City Departmentof Education and Training. The menu is based on the school meal project jointly implemented by Ajinomoto Company and the National Institute of Nutrition.

"The school's lunches are calculated with appropriate calories for each age group. Not all students eat the same amount. The calories are calculated by the software. Food is purchased from reputable suppliers, ensuring food hygiene and safety," said Ms. Hien.

According to the vice principal, before meals, teachers will conduct a 3-minute awareness-changing program.

"There are many picky eaters who do not eat certain foods, many do not eat vegetables. Teachers choose the foods that students often leave behind to introduce the health benefits of that food.

In addition, some videos introducing the uses of foods are also shown to students," Ms. Hien added.

Besides sharing about the menu, the school representative discussed the food preparation process and toured the one-way kitchen. Raw food goes in one door, is prepared and processed, and cooked food comes out another door, and is transferred directly to the student dining room.

At mealtime, students from each class automatically wash their hands and line up in front of the food truck. Students take spoons and chopsticks, receive food trays from the caterer, and carry them into the classroom to eat. After eating, students return the food trays to the caterer, brush their teeth, and then take a nap.

Today's school lunch menu is broken rice with pork ribs, kohlrabi and carrot soup with shrimp and cucumber. Fruit for dessert.

Students said they really enjoyed Friday meals because they got to eat "strange" and delicious food. Meanwhile, many parents said that school meals were better than at home!

"Students are trained in self-service skills and are also taught that it is their responsibility. Therefore, the school really needs the cooperation of parents. At home, parents absolutely do not feed their children. At school, children are independent, but at home, parents do it for them, which affects their ability to be independent," the vice principal reminded parents.
