On April 22, 2025, the Vietnamese blood transfusion industry recorded a major step forward when the Center for Hematology and Blood Transfusion - Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital - was officially certified by the Austrian Food and Health Safety Authority (under the Austrian Ministry of Health ) to meet European Good Manufacturing Practice (EU-GMP) standards for the production and management of blood and plasma products.
This is an outstanding achievement after more than two years of efforts to comprehensively reform the quality management system according to strict international standards.
EU-GMP certification – one of the world’s leading standards in the pharmaceutical and medical biological industry – is an affirmation of the professional level and high-quality operational capacity of the center’s team, while marking a strategic milestone, bringing the Vietnamese blood and plasma transfusion sector closer to regional and global standards.
The process of preparing and implementing the EU-GMP system at the center was a challenging journey. From upgrading the infrastructure, restructuring the management system, providing intensive training for staff to establishing strict control procedures for each stage of collecting, preserving and distributing blood and plasma products – all were carried out with great determination and a spirit of learning.
In particular, the close support from the Board of Directors of Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital and the professional support from GMP experts of Binh Viet Duc Company Limited and the Blood Bank - Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital have played a key role, helping the center gradually overcome technical barriers and comprehensively perfect the operating system.

Applying EU-GMP standards to the quality management of blood banks and plasma products not only ensures safety, stability and efficiency in the blood transfusion process, but also contributes to improving the quality of treatment, especially for groups of patients requiring long-term blood transfusion or treatment with plasma rich in clotting factors.
This is an important foundation for developing specialized techniques in screening, preserving and isolating plasma, expanding professional capacity and serving the international integration strategy of the Vietnamese health sector.
EU-GMP certification is not only the pride of the medical staff and technical staff of Thanh Hoa Provincial Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center, but also a symbol of the potential of the Vietnamese blood transfusion and plasma industry in building a safe and modern medical biological product system, aiming for sustainable development and serving the community in the best way.
Up to now, the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center - Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital - has developed comprehensively in terms of scale, human resources and professional quality.
The center currently operates effectively in 3 units, has nearly 100 inpatient beds, receives over 4,500 patients each year with complex hematological diseases such as hemophilia, multiple myeloma, thalassemia, etc.; and simultaneously performs millions of tests from basic to advanced, effectively serving the treatment work.
With a modern equipment system, high-quality management process, especially the certification of meeting European Good Manufacturing Practice (EU-GMP) standards by 2025, the center has become one of the first two units in the country to meet this standard.
At the conference, delegates discussed and shared new advances in the field of hematology and blood transfusion, such as: Activities to maintain the quality of blood banks meeting EU-GMP standards; Syphilis screening tests to ensure blood transfusion safety, present and future; Safe blood storage and use; Hematology testing and treatment of blood diseases and blood-forming organs.
