China has just attracted attention when building an underwater AI data center, a revolutionary project implemented by the Hailanyun company. Not stopping at testing, they aim to commercialize this model within 3 years. The system utilizes seawater for cooling, instead of using thousands of cubic meters of fresh water as is traditionally done. This solution saves up to 30% of electricity and significantly reduces operating costs.
Notably, the center is directly connected to offshore wind power, providing up to 97% of its operating energy. This is one of the rare “green” data center projects with almost zero carbon emissions. According to Hailanyun, the underwater server cluster is capable of training a language model as large as GPT-3.5 in just one day. If it expands as planned, Shanghai could become the new “AI capital” of the world .
Compared to Microsoft, which is only testing Project Natick in Scotland, China has already entered the commercialization stage. This shows Beijing's strong ambition in the field of AI infrastructure. However, experts warn about the environmental impact, worrying about the impact on the marine ecosystem. In addition, security risks from underwater sounds or vibrations are also raised. China claims that the increase in heat output is less than 1°C and is insignificant to the environment. With an investment of more than 200 million USD, they are willing to accept the risk to stay ahead in the race.
If successful, China will not only solve the energy problem for AI but also gain a strategic advantage. The technological competition with the US and the West will certainly be hotter than ever.
