During the meeting, the two leaders discussed bilateral issues and ways to further strengthen relations between China and Malaysia.
President Xi Jinping affirmed that China and Malaysia have a “friendship that has lasted more than 1,000 years”. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1974, the two countries “have always enjoyed good friendship and helped each other in times of difficulty, setting a shining example of common progress and win-win cooperation between countries”.
According to a statement on social media X by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying, “President Xi Jinping said he will work with Sultan Ibrahim to make new progress in building a China-Malaysia community with a shared future to bring more benefits to the people of the two countries.”
This is King Ibrahim's first foreign visit since he ascended the throne last July.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia. The two countries upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2013. Bilateral trade is expected to reach about US$190.24 billion by 2023.
Sultan Ibrahim's visit comes after the Philippine Daily Inquirer published a document late last month stating that China's Foreign Ministry had asked Malaysia to immediately halt exploration activities in an oil-rich area off the coast of Sarawak.
