Efficiency beyond expectations
In Kim Dinh commune, Kim Son district, this year's winter-spring crop marks the first time local farmers have tested the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety. Mr. Tran Van Tu, a farmer in hamlet 7, Kim Dinh commune, shared: "This is the first crop I have produced Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety. Although the weather this season is not favorable, the temperature and rainfall are lower than the average of many years, and there is little sunshine, Ngoc Nuong 9 still grows well. There are many flowers on the clump, the grains are packed tightly, and the percentage of empty grains is almost non-existent, so the yield must be 2.2 quintals/sao or more."
Mr. Hoang Khac Vinh, Director of Kim Dinh Cooperative, added: “This winter-spring crop, we introduced Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety into a trial with an area of 3 hectares and 8 households participated. Initially, many people were skeptical and did not dare to plant the new variety. But now, when looking at this rice field full of grains, many people regret not participating.”
According to Mr. Vinh, for many years, the cooperative has only cultivated a few old rice varieties such as Bac Thom, LT 2, Nep 97… which have degenerated, are susceptible to pests and diseases and have low yields. “This year, we tested the Ngoc Nuong 9 variety and found that this variety is easy to care for, has good yields, few pests and diseases and good rice quality. Surely next season, farmers will expand the cultivation area of this new variety,” Mr. Vinh affirmed.
The story of bringing Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety to Kim Dinh had a significant contribution from Mr. Tran Van The, Secretary of the Party Committee of Kim Dinh Commune. He was the one who proactively contacted the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection (BVTV) and Vinaseed Company to bring this rice variety to the locality for testing.
When asked if it was “reckless” to decide to test the new variety in the Winter-Spring crop - the most important rice crop of the year, Mr. The smiled and replied: “I was introduced to the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety by Vinaseed staff from the 2024 Summer-Autumn crop and had my family try planting it. Seeing the good yield and quality, I decided to bring it back for the people in the commune to test in this crop. Moreover, during the rice crop, the company's technical staff regularly visit the fields, advise, and support the technical process, so we don't have to worry much.”
According to comments from trial producers, the Ngoc Nuong 9 purebred rice variety is well adapted to local natural conditions, easy to cultivate, less susceptible to pests and diseases, and has a relatively high yield. In fact, in the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop, the yield will reach about 64 quintals/ha.
In particular, this rice variety has firm grains and is heavy. While other rice varieties usually yield 6.2 kg of rice from 10 kg of paddy, with Ngoc Nuong 9, the yield will be slightly higher, about 6.5 kg. This brings higher economic efficiency to farmers.
More quality options for farmers
The purebred rice variety Ngoc Nuong 9, researched and created by Vinaseed, has been widely circulated in the Northern region and is currently in the process of trial production in the Southern provinces to expand the scope of circulation nationwide.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Duc, Director of Ha Nam Branch, Vietnam Seed Group Joint Stock Company (Vinaseed), said: “When researching and creating new varieties, the most important goal is to make them easy to cultivate, easy to apply mechanization, helping to reduce input costs by about 3%. In addition, the Company also pays special attention to rice quality, prioritizing the high-end rice segment, meeting the modern consumption trend of “eating well, eating clean”. Ngoc Nuong 9 was born to meet those needs.”
This is the third crop of Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety put into demonstration production in Ninh Binh. In the previous two crops, this rice variety was successfully tested at Van Tra Cooperative, Yen Thang Commune, Lien Phuong Cooperative, Yen Nhan Commune (Yen Mo District); Kien Trung Cooperative, Kien Thai Cooperative, Khanh Trung Commune (Yen Khanh District).
Actual production results in the field show that the purebred Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety has outstanding advantages: Good growth and development, less susceptible to pests. Strong plants, resistant to lodging, favorable for mechanization in production. Widely adaptable, suitable for many ecological regions and seasons of the year. With good intensive farming techniques, the yield reaches about 65 quintals/ha. Farmers consider it one of the best rice varieties ever, both in taste and aroma, delicious rice, soft, sticky, rich in flavor.
After 3 crops, farmers have also drawn important fertilization experiences: focus on nutrition in the early stages for healthy plant growth, then gradually reduce to avoid falling and limit pests and diseases.
A representative of the Ninh Binh Province Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection assessed: “Initial results show that Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety has good adaptability, grows well, is quite cold-resistant, and is more prominent than many other rice varieties in the same conditions. Compared to the control variety ST25, Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety has a shorter growth and tillering time, and a higher effective tillering rate.”
In particular, Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety has a lower rate of empty grains than the control variety by 2%, and the theoretical yield and expected yield are higher than the control variety. The actual yield is 64.26 quintals/ha (equivalent to 231.3 kg/sao), 2.73 quintals/ha (equivalent to 9.8 kg/sao) higher than the control variety. Moreover, the variety gives good quality rice, sticky, spongy, soft, and has a light aroma. Overall, Ngoc Nuong 9 is showing high potential for yield and quality.
In the coming time, the Department will continue to coordinate demonstrations in a number of localities in the province in the following crops to monitor and have a basis for accurately assessing the adaptability (cold tolerance, lodging resistance and resistance to pests and diseases, especially leaf blast, neck blast in the winter-spring crop and leaf blight in the summer-autumn crop), as well as the production efficiency of Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety for replication throughout the province.
