Freeing 2 elephants chained at Thu Le park

The above information was announced by Mr. Le Si Dung - General Director of Hanoi Zoo One Member Co., Ltd. on the afternoon of August 17.

According to Mr. Dung, yesterday afternoon (August 16), the unit purchased new electric fence equipment, replacing the old broken equipment, and installed it in the elephant barn area.

The General Director revealed that after nearly a day of being unchained, the two elephants at the zoo basically adapted very quickly because they were used to the living space here.

"Since being unchained, the two elephants have adapted very well. Even when they approach the fence or stand next to each other, they do not conflict or become aggressive. We were very worried about releasing the two elephants in case they accidentally conflict or have an accident, but fortunately nothing has happened yet," said Mr. Dung.

Explaining why the elephants were chained and unable to move even though the enclosure was equipped with an electric fence, the leader of the Hanoi Zoo said that the device in the area where the two elephants lived was broken and the unit had to repair it.

"Each elephant weighs more than 2 tons and if they fight, no one can intervene, so we have to chain their legs. The chaining is only to control and ensure the distance between the two elephants, while the chain is still long. This is a measure to ensure the safety of both the elephants and the staff directly caring for them," Mr. Dung explained.

Previously, at the end of July, information and images of two elephants being kept in confined conditions, chained by their legs at Hanoi Zoo caused a stir in public opinion.

Many opinions say that Hanoi Zoo needs to apply other preventive measures to restore freedom and improve living conditions for the two elephants. Other opinions question that there must be a reason why the elephants are chained like that.

After that, Animals Asia sent a document to the Hanoi People's Committee proposing a plan to bring two elephants from Hanoi Zoo to Yok Don National Park ( Dak Lak ).
