On May 21, US President Joe Biden said that tensions between the US and China would "thaw very quickly".

Biden made the statement at a press conference after attending the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Hiroshima, Japan. Biden said the G7 countries agreed on an approach to China that seeks to reduce risks but does not decouple from the world's second largest economy .

President Biden also said that after tensions over the "Chinese balloon incident" last January, the two countries should have an open line of communication.

Mr. Biden recalled that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to keep communication open between the two countries when the two leaders met at the Group of 20 (G20) Summit in Bali, Indonesia last year.

Despite no signs of a thaw in tensions, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Wang Yi met in Vienna in early May and discussed key issues for hours. At the time, the US and Chinese governments said they agreed to keep lines of communication open.
