Speaking on television, Prime Minister Sanchez said he had informed King Felipe VI of his decision to dissolve parliament and call for early general elections on July 23.

He stressed that in his role as head of the Government and President of the PSOE party, as well as based on the results of the local elections, he considered it necessary to respond to the people's aspirations.

Thus, the general election will take place after Spain takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) on July 1.

In local elections on May 28, considered a test for the general election scheduled for later this year, Prime Minister Sanchez's PSOE and its ally Podemos lost to their opponents, the conservative opposition People's Party (PP) and the far-right Vox party.

Specifically, in the city council elections, the PP received more than 7 million votes (equivalent to 31.52%), the PSOE received nearly 6.3 million votes (28.11%). At the regional level, the PP also achieved significant results when receiving support in 6 regions that the PSOE used to control.
