Kepa becomes the next goalkeeper, after Petr Cech, to leave Chelsea for Arsenal. |
According to The Athletic , Kepa agreed personal terms with the Gunners and is ready to join the Emirates Stadium to compete fairly with David Raya for the starting position next season.
The North London club will pay their city partner a £5 million release clause, before officially announcing Kepa as a new signing in the summer of 2025. Previously, Chelsea spent £72 million to recruit Kepa from Bilbao.
After Neto's loan deal ended and the Brazilian returned to Bournemouth, manager Mikel Arteta was forced to look for a quality backup option to supplement the goalkeeper position.
Arsenal initially targeted Joan Garcia but eventually missed out when the goalkeeper chose to join Barcelona. This change caused the Arsenal board to quickly turn to Kepa, a name that had been removed from coach Enzo Maresca's plans.
In the 2024/25 season, Kepa showed his solidity and experience, helping Bournemouth get closer to the European Cup. However, Chelsea decided not to keep him, creating conditions for Arsenal to approach for a reasonable fee. This is considered a favorable deal both financially and professionally for the North London team.
Kepa is no longer a stranger in the Premier League. He was the most expensive goalkeeper in the world when he joined Chelsea in 2018 and won the Champions League with the blue team. Although Kepa's career at Stamford Bridge has not been entirely smooth, it cannot be denied that he is still a goalkeeper with ability, courage and especially experience playing in a top environment.
The addition of Kepa not only adds depth to the squad but also creates much-needed competition for David Raya. Arteta has always valued competition in the squad and adding a quality goalkeeper will help the Emirates team maintain stability both domestically and in Europe.
