Turkey has launched air strikes against suspected Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) strongholds inside Iraqi Kurdistan, in response to a suicide bombing near the interior ministry in Ankara on October 1.

The Turkish Defense Ministry said “20 targets used by terrorists” were destroyed in the “air operation”, which took place in the Metina, Hakurk, Qandil and Gara areas of northern Iraq at around 9pm on October 1.

Ankara said the aim of the airstrikes was to “neutralize the PKK and other terrorist elements, prevent terrorist attacks from northern Iraq against Turkish citizens and law enforcement agencies, and ensure the security of Turkey’s borders.”

Earlier, local media reported that a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device outside the Interior Ministry headquarters in the Turkish capital Ankara.

The Turkish Interior Ministry said in a statement that the attack was a terrorist act and that at least two suspects were involved in the incident. According to the statement, one suspect detonated a suicide vest, while the other was promptly subdued by security forces.

Officials said two police officers were injured in the attack. Turkish media later published images of armored vehicles on the streets of Ankara, along with security forces on patrol.

The attack took place on the day the Turkish Parliament was scheduled to meet today. Immediately after the attack, security measures were tightened around the parliament building and around the Turkish Interior Ministry building.
