How should one prepare for the high school graduation exam on computer?

World trends

In fact, the high school graduation exam on computers was mentioned by the Ministry of Education and Training about 5 years ago and was mentioned byeducation and technology experts even earlier, along with predictions about the speed of technological development in Vietnam.

In particular, every time an incident or case of exam cheating occurs, there are opinions that "taking exams on computers" is a change to limit cheating and the inadequacies of traditional exam methods.

Along with the orientation of computer-based exams, education experts also proposed to the Ministry of Education and Training about accompanying changes such as organizing multiple exams, innovating the way of creating exam questions and applying software to control cheating... The way of organizing exams of some independent testing organizations in the world such as ETs, ACT...

Recently, the organization of computer-based exams in competency assessment and thinking assessment exams conducted by Vietnamese universities with exam clusters scattered in many regions is also a reliable basis for moving towards organizing high school graduation exams on computers.

"Computer-based exams are a global trend. With the current information technology infrastructure, it is entirely possible to organize high school graduation exams on computers. It can even be done earlier than the 2027 milestone" - Dr. Le Truong Tung, Chairman of the Board of Directors of FPT University, said.

According to Mr. Tung, 20 years ago, FPT University students took exams on computers, using their own personal computers.

Mr. Tung said that in addition to having technical measures to prevent students from cheating by asking for support from outside people or systems, and doing a good job of post-checking, the exam questions are an important factor when applying this form of exam. Accordingly, the exam questions can allow students to refer to documents but still test their abilities.

"Currently, AI is involved in a lot of the learning process, it is difficult to prevent learners from using AI to fulfill learning requirements. Therefore, the only thing to do is to change the way of creating exams, testing, and evaluating. In about 2-3 years, the development speed of AI will be even greater. Therefore, returning to organizing exams on computers, innovating exam questions, and building an exam bank are very important conditions," Mr. Tung shared.

Need to follow the route

However, organizing an exam for students of a university or organizing an exam to assess the ability and thinking of a group of candidates in some favorable areas is completely different from organizing an exam for more than 1 million candidates nationwide, including favorable areas, difficult areas, border areas, and islands.

Therefore, education and technology experts believe that there should be a roadmap: first in some cities and convenient areas, where transmission lines, machinery and equipment can be guaranteed. Then gradually expand to the whole country.

There are also many different opinions on whether to hold exams at schools or at testing centers. Some opinions suggest that exams should be held at high schools, but many others suggest that independent testing centers should be established.

"With computer-based exams, we will have to consider organizing multiple exam sessions during the year. Even a candidate who does not get the desired results in round 1 can take round 2 or round 3. Dividing exam clusters and multiple exam sessions will reduce the stress and pressure that is currently concentrated in one exam.

But because of this particularity, high schools cannot be responsible for the exams. Schools are mainly for teaching, and the exam organization should be left to testing centers," a principal of a university in the Hanoi area expressed his opinion.

High school graduation exam tested on computers in some localities

Preparing for the innovation of "computer-based testing", last year the Ministry of Education and Training organized a pilot test on computers in many localities including the North - Central - South, both urban and rural areas. Each locality organized for about 200 - 250 high school students to participate and received good results.

According to a teacher at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, one of the places that coordinated the testing of the computer-based high school graduation exam, the organization of the exam went smoothly, and students basically met the requirements. However, this teacher also said that if the exam were organized on a large scale, more issues would need to be taken into account.

Specifically, students need to be guided and practice taking the test on computers during the review period to get familiar with the test format, test structure, test time, and even how to use the computer proficiently. Not to mention other issues such as transmission conditions, machines, technical solutions to control negative...

Strengthening the application of information technology

According to Mr. Huynh Van Chuong, Director of the Department of Education Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training), the 2025 high school graduation exam will maintain the paper-based exam method, but will increase the application of information technology in all stages of the exam.

Based on the results of the pilot exam, the Ministry of Education and Training will study the application of computer-based exams in qualified localities. When localities nationwide are qualified, the high school graduation exam will be organized on computers with multiple-choice subjects.
