This year, in Ho Chi Minh City, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted will enroll students nationwide for the first time, along with Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted and the High School for the Gifted (Ho Chi Minh City National University). In addition, according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, Ho Chi Minh City will also stop enrolling students in 22 specialized classes at mass high schools, effective from the 2025-2026 school year.
It was thought that this would contribute to increasing the "heat" of specialized schools, but in reality, the opposite was true, as this year the competition ratio at the three specialized schools all decreased compared to 2024, in which the Gifted High School ranked first with 3,509 candidates taking the exam to compete for 595 places, a competition ratio of 1/5.8. This number at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted and Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted was 1/4.9 and 1/3.6 respectively.
The above reality comes from the fact that the total number of candidates taking the 10th grade specialized exam in Ho Chi Minh City is the lowest in the past 4 years with 5,550 students registered, a decrease of nearly 2,700 compared to 2024 according to data from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training. "I think many students are hesitant to register for the 10th grade specialized exam because there are no more specialized classes in mainstream schools, and they feel that their abilities are not enough," Pham Duc Tri, a student at Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School (District 1), explained.
However, this does not relieve Tri of the pressure because "few people taking the exam does not mean few good people taking the exam". On the contrary, the male student believes that those who still choose to enter Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia at this time are capable. "I'm still worried", Tri said. "This year's English exam is neither easy nor difficult, but the open cloze type of questions is simpler than previous years", Tri added.

Agreeing, Ha Ngoc Quynh Anh, a student at Hai Ba Trung Secondary School (District 3), also said that the mentality of "fear of fierce competition" when Ho Chi Minh City only has 2 specialized schools is the reason why many students did not register for the specialized exam this year (Gifted High School is under Ho Chi Minh City National University and organizes its own entrance exam, not using the exam results of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training - PV).
"The number of candidates has decreased but their academic ability is still strong, of course there are many students who are much better than me. I hope to get into a specialized school, if not, I hope to keep my first choice," the female student confided.
On the other hand, according to Le Ngoc Thao Nhien, a student at Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School, many candidates did not choose to take the specialized exam because this is the first year that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has applied the exam according to the 2018 GeneralEducation Program. "You are not sure that you will do well in the 3 regular subjects, so you do not register for the specialized exam to reduce the risk. I myself feel less pressured when I see the number of candidates taking the specialized exam decrease," Nhien confided.
Le Si Bao Khang, a student at the same school, commented that the decrease in the number of candidates also helped him reduce some pressure, but not much, because in the class, there seemed to be only one student who did not register for the entrance exam to specialized schools in Ho Chi Minh City. "They are all good students, determined to compete for a place in a specialized school, so the competitive pressure for me is still very high," Khang shared.
