Silently for the happiness and health of the people on the front line

Each birth, each healthy baby is a mark of the silent efforts of the team of doctors and nurses in the highlands.

In the middle of the clouds and mountains, where the villages are still isolated, the cries of newborn babies still resound in the small rooms of 12 medical stations in the communes of Tram Tau, Ta Xi Lang, Phinh Ho, Hanh Phuc. That is the sound of the beginning of life and also the faith and hope that the ethnic minorities here entrust to the grassroots doctors and nurses - those who silently take care of the people's health day and night.

From a birth at a medical facility

The sky in the highlands was dark, the shadow of the mountains stretched down the small, winding path. The winding, steep road brought us to Tram Tau Medical Station, Tram Tau Commune.

During a simple dinner in a small room, with a slight smile, Doctor Nguyen Thi Mai Phuong - Head of Tram Tau Medical Station shared: "Working as a doctor in the highlands, there are many difficulties, but perhaps the most precious thing for me is the trust of the people. Whenever I am sick, they come to me and listen to my instructions. When I recover, some people even bring wild vegetables to thank me. Those simple feelings become the motivation for every medical staff like me to stick with this place, considering it as my second home."

Doctor Phuong said that on cold, rainy winter nights, just a knock on the door would make her quickly put on her coat and run down to the village with her neighbors. Once, to save a woman in labor in the middle of the night, the entire station had to take turns carrying her across a slippery slope of several kilometers.

Her eyes lit up with simple joy, Doctor Phuong smiled gently and said: "It's tiring, but when I hear the cry of a newborn baby and see the bright smile on the mother's face, all the hardships seem to disappear."

While lost in the story of the memories, difficulties and hardships of the medical team in the highlands, at night, suddenly from afar, an urgent voice called out, with a slurred voice: "Doctor, doctor". Before she could ask, Ms. Phuong quickly stood up, put on a thin blouse and rushed outside.

A Mong woman in labor was helped to the station door by her family. Immediately, Ms. Phuong supported the woman's trembling arm, her eyes reassuring the family: "Don't worry, take her inside right away". The small delivery room quickly lit up. The basic tools for the delivery were prepared in a flash, and the experienced hands of a highland doctor suddenly became surprisingly steady. Alone on duty, Ms. Phuong remained steadfast as a support, both encouraging the woman in labor and patiently performing each familiar task.

After more than two hours of tense watching and waiting, suddenly the sound: "Oe, oe..." rang out, tearing apart the quiet night. Then in the arms of doctor Phuong, the newborn baby moved weakly. Doctor Phuong's eyes were filled with tears, her gentle smile seemed to gather all the joy of the mother's family into her heart. That scene made us extremely moved! In the middle of the remote mountainous area, where many families had to travel dozens of kilometers to get to the regional medical center, now, the babies were born right at the medical station, receiving dedicated care when the people's trust was entrusted and cherished by the team of medical staff at the grassroots level.

Joining hands on the journey to take care of reproductive health at the front line

Just like at Tram Tau Health Station, Tram Tau commune, where Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai Phuong is the Station Chief, at 11 other health stations in Ta Xi Lang, Phinh Ho, Hanh Phuc, Tram Tau communes, taking care of women's reproductive health is not simply a job, it is a journey of attachment, quiet but meaningful.

Along with stethoscopes and medicine boxes, the medical staff also carries patience, love and legs accustomed to climbing mountains and wading streams. Those persistent steps bring doctors and nurses closer to the lives of the people, dispelling the fear of illness in remote villages, bringing faith and safety to each family.

Specialist Doctor I, Dinh Thi Minh Luyen - Director of Tram Tau Regional Medical Center said: “Every year, the medical stations of Ta Xi Lang, Phinh Ho, Hanh Phuc, Tram Tau communes under Tram Tau Regional Medical Center receive and monitor hundreds of maternity cases, in which many pregnant women are examined and have their pregnancy periodically managed right at the commune. Although the grassroots medical staff is still small and lacking in equipment, they always make efforts to persevere in the village, instruct pregnant women and children and provide health advice. Therefore, the rate of mothers and children accessing timely medical services in the communes is increasing.”

In the first 7 months of 2025, in the communes of Tram Tau, Phinh Ho, Ta Xi Lang, and Hanh Phuc, there were 783 pregnant women. The stations performed 2,110 prenatal check-ups, and 498 women gave birth, including 250 births at medical facilities and 248 births outside medical facilities. Notably, 418/498 births were directly assisted by trained medical staff.

Regarding prenatal check-ups, 325 women had more than 4 prenatal check-ups in 3 pregnancies. Postnatal care was also focused on with 414 mothers and newborns being monitored and cared for, of which 367 cases were cared for in the first week after birth.

Looking back at the picture of people's health care in the communes of Ta Xi Lang, Phinh Ho, Tram Tau, Hanh Phuc, it can be seen that the efforts of medical staff and the trust of the community have formed an increasingly solid network of maternal and child health care. Each birth, each healthy baby is a mark of the silent efforts of the team of doctors and nurses in the highlands.
