Marc-Andre ter Stegen's announcement of retirement has thrown Barcelona's player registration plans into turmoil. |
Ter Stegen's situation poses a major problem for Barcelona's player registration plans, especially the registration of new signing goalkeeper Joan Garcia. The Catalans face the risk of not being able to register Garcia, further complicating their preparation strategy for the 2025/26 La Liga season.
According to Mundo Deportivo , Ter Stegen will be out for four months if he undergoes surgery to treat a persistent knee injury. The injury will cause him to miss pre-season.
Barcelona had initially planned to use La Liga's rules, which allow clubs to use 80% of a player's salary for a long-term injury (a minimum of four months) to sign a replacement, to make way for new goalkeeper García. However, in a statement released early on July 25, Ter Stegen confirmed that he would undergo surgery and would only be out for three months, from the end of July to the end of October.
This means Barcelona are not eligible to trigger La Liga's emergency wage mechanism, which requires a minimum of four months of injury time. Ter Stegen's change in recovery time is a blow to Barcelona, who are already facing La Liga's strict salary cap.
Previously, coach Hansi Flick informed Ter Stegen in a meeting on July 11 that he would only be the third choice in goal next season, behind Garcia (number 1) and Szczęsny (number 2). This decision was considered a shock to the German goalkeeper, especially when Ter Stegen is the captain and has a contract until 2028.
Ter Stegen then responded. The goalkeeper decided to refuse to attend the first training session with the team, but still appeared at Barcelona's headquarters on the first day of the team meeting.
