It is known that Fujian is China's third aircraft carrier and also the largest, with a displacement of over 80,000 tons when fully loaded. The flat flight deck design and three electromagnetic catapults allow Fujian to deploy modern aircraft much more flexibly and effectively. Photo: @CCTV.

Since its launch at Jiangnan Shipyard, the aircraft carrier has undergone eight sea trials. Photo: @CCTV.

Now, as preparations continue for the new aircraft carrier Fujian to enter service later this year, the Chinese Navy is said to have recently begun testing the new J-15T fighter jets on the aircraft carrier using a new electromagnetic catapult. Photo: @CCTV.

This move was hinted at by an official Chinese media outlet, when they released a clip recording the J-15T operating with the Fujian aircraft carrier, through successfully performing an electromagnetic catapult take-off test. Photo: @CCTV.

The clip attracted attention when it showed the vibrant images and the take-off command from the control room of the Fujian aircraft carrier: “Parameters checked. Position two ready for take-off… All ready, normal conditions… Take-off!”. Photo: @CCTV.

In another scene, the silhouette of the J-15T fighter jet is clearly visible on the flight deck of the Fujian ship after take-off, while the actual take-off scene is not clearly shown in the clip. Photo: @CCTV.

If confirmed, the successful test would make China the second country in the world after the United States to have the ability to launch fighter jets using an electromagnetic launch system on an aircraft carrier. Currently, the USS Gerald R. Ford is the only active aircraft carrier using this similar technology. Photo: @CCTV.

It should be recalled that the new J-15T fighter jet, which was officially unveiled at the 2024 Zhuhai Airshow, is an improved version of the J-15A, which is currently operating on China's Liaoning and Shandong aircraft carriers. Photo: @CCTV.

However, the J-15T fighter in the clip has been specially designed to be launched by electromagnetic catapult, meaning it is only for the Fujian and Type 004 aircraft carriers currently under development. Photo: @CCTV.

Visually, the carrier-based J-15T can be easily distinguished from the standard versions, thanks to its reinforced nose landing gear, which has longer and wider shock absorbers designed to help the fighter withstand the increased pressure when launched by an electromagnetic catapult. Photo: @CCTV.

In addition, this aircraft is also equipped with a launch bar to hook onto an electromagnetic catapult, creating a difference compared to the standard J-15. This ability makes the J-15T a more effective and powerful choice for the Chinese navy's future aircraft carriers. Photo: @CCTV.
