
According to documentary sources, traditional craft activities in the ancient trading port of Hoi An were very bustling, with more than 50 occupations concentrated in 4 groups: handicrafts, mining services, processing and special occupations.
According to some cultural researchers, tourists - especially Western tourists - find traditional villages and craft villages to be places that provide vivid knowledge about cultural history, which is very useful and interesting.
Over the years, the images of spinning wheels, silkworm trays, weaving frames; the silhouettes of village girls spinning thread, threading needles... in the space of silkworms in the old countryside at the Hoi An Folklore Museum or in the premises of the Hoi An Silk Village Company have always been vivid and attractive images for tourists. Nearby in the Hoi An Folklore Museum, the tools for fishing on the river also always attract the attention and curiosity of tourists...
Tourists come to and stay at these craft villages and mini museums about traditional crafts to better understand the “stories about craft culture”, helping them deeply feel the production value and products crystallized from the efforts, creativity and ingenuity of the workers.
Mr. Phan Xuan Thanh - Chairman of Quang Nam Province Tourism Association said: "Currently, tourism is supported the most by agriculture and fisheries. Therefore, we must preserve the traditional craft villages of the people. Because tourism to explore the cultural and social life is very important."
Over the years, Hoi An has organized many events and activities imbued with the cultural identity of the ancient trading port city. Notably, the International Food Festival with the participation of many famous chefs in the world , attracted the attention of many people.
Besides, the exchange of Vietnamese and international silk and brocade creates an opportunity to restore the sericulture and silk weaving profession in Quang Nam, contributing to the revival of the maritime silk road associated with the ancient trading port of Hoi An.
The Thanh Ha - Hoi An Pottery Festival program was organized with many unique activities in the craft village space, which also enriched and improved the quality and effectiveness of activities on the occasion of the Thanh Ha Pottery Ancestor Commemoration Festival.
Mr. Tran Anh - former Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the City People's Council shared that these are the three important links that Hoi An used to have in the past. They are the intersection of the spice road (now with cuisine), the ceramic road (with Thanh Ha ceramics) and the silk road (with images in the Folklore Museum and Hoi An Silk Village Company). "These are the features that help restore a historical period of Hoi An and become unique tourism products," said Mr. Anh.
Currently, Hoi An continues to promote and effectively exploit craft villages and activities in traditional and unique craft villages. Tourism activities are increasingly diversified with the exploitation of more tours and ecological village tourism routes...
