Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has officially been released and quickly created a fever on the Steam platform, reaching a peak of 114,000 players in just a few hours. The game has attracted a large number of gamers since its launch thanks to its successful approach to the Chinese gaming community, similar to the case of Black Myth: Wukong.
However, this initial success has been overshadowed by a wave of “overwhelmingly negative” reviews from the gaming community, with over 10,400 critical comments on Steam. As of writing, only 2,100 (or about 16.6%) of the total player reviews are positive.
Contrary to critics
Over 10,400 negative reviews for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers mainly focus on performance issues and instability of the game. Many players commented that the use of Unreal Engine technology caused many bugs, making it difficult for them to do even basic activities like exploring the world or fighting enemies.
"UE5 games often have inconsistent performance, and unfortunately this game's performance is terrible," one player wrote.
Another comment questioned the quality of the tool: “Another unstable UE5 title. Why don’t the developers optimize the game properly instead of promoting technologies like frame generation or upscaling?”

Even the positive reviews were somewhat sarcastic, with players primarily praising the appearance of the female protagonist Wuchang and the sexy outfits, before giving the game high marks.
Despite its apparent failure on Steam, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has received mostly positive reviews from critics. At the time of writing, the game has a Metascore of 75, which is quite good.
Meanwhile, Insider Gaming rated Wuchang: Fallen Feathers 4/5 points and commented: "This is the beginning of an attractive game series that fans of the Souls series should experience."
Additionally, the game also achieved a Metascore of 75 on PlayStation 5, 76 on PC, and 83 on Xbox Series X/S. On OpenCritic, the average score from top critics is 75, with 71% of them recommending it.
Controversial elements
In addition to optimization issues, some of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers ' negative reviews also stem from subjective reasons. Specifically, the game has been criticized for its negative attitude towards women, as it repeatedly depicts female characters suffering horrific pain in exchange for scantily clad outfits.
This seems to be a common case with games that feature attractive female characters. A notable trend that is emerging is that many Western game critics are giving negative reviews to games simply because they feature attractive female characters.

It's also worth mentioning that Black Myth: Wukong received low scores from many review sites for being "not diverse enough," despite the fact that the main character is a monkey. In addition, some other critics, despite the game's fairly good scores, gave unprofessional comments.
These cases have caused a huge wave of controversy, as the fan community believes that it is normal for female characters in games to have attractive appearances. The blockbuster “Stellar Blade” has also received a lot of criticism from critics, and even the game’s director was personally attacked, when a journalist commented that “the director of Stellar Blade has never seen a woman,” even though he is married.
The fan community is expressing their displeasure at such unbiased reviews and continues to criticize those who have rated the game based on personal views and bias.
