Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) regularly share selfies with Earth and the amazing phenomena happening in space.

Now you can also take a selfie in space without actually stepping foot in outer space.

How is that possible? According to The Verge , a new satellite is about to launch that will let you take selfies with the Earth in the background.

Mark Rober is the main person behind this project. He is an American engineer, inventor and educator , known for his popular science videos and DIY tutorials on YouTube.

Before becoming a YouTuber, he worked at NASA, contributing to the Curiosity rover project on Mars.

Recently, Rober announced a unique project called "Space Selfie".

The new project, which Mark Rober collaborates with Google and T-Mobile, will launch a satellite called SAT GUS in January 2025 via SpaceX's Transporter 12 mission.

The satellite is equipped with two Google Pixel phones and two cameras. One of them is a Google Pixel phone inside a radiation-proof housing. Another camera is mounted opposite the phone to take selfies of you with the Earth in the background.

In addition, the satellite also has a GPS locator and solar panels to power the device.

Users simply upload their selfies to the platform and through the established system will receive a selfie image with the Earth as the backdrop.

In a YouTube video , Rober describes his project as: "This is one small step for mankind, but a giant leap forward for your… selfie game."

"If you provide the name of the city where you live when uploading a photo, the satellite will not only take a selfie over your city but also notify the exact time of the event," Rober shared.

When the time comes, you can step outside, wave, and the camera will capture you again in the selfie. You can even appear twice in the same photo.

This creative invention has surprised the online community and made them excitedly wait for the opportunity to have a unique selfie with the Earth in the background.

One user commented on Rober's video: "This is something that when I was a kid, I thought was only in science fiction! And now it's become possible for everyone!"
