(Dan Tri) - A solar storm on New Year's Eve could cause the northern lights to appear in the US as people welcome the new year 2025.

New Year's Eve fireworks may not be the only thing lighting up the sky as the clocks strike midnight to signal the arrival of the new year.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center, starting Tuesday night, the aurora borealis is expected to appear in many parts of North America.

A coronal mass ejection, a series of magnetic and plasma discharges from the Sun's outer atmosphere, is expected to reach Earth on Tuesday and create a powerful geomagnetic storm across the Northern Hemisphere, giving many Americans a spectacular view as they ring in the new year.

“Auroras may be visible in many parts of the northern states and some lower Midwest terrain, down to Oregon,” NOAA said.

The northern lights are typically seen in the Arctic regions, but because the current solar cycle has peaked and created major solar storms, the bright bands of light have appeared this year in parts of the United States that normally wouldn't see them.

Each solar cycle lasts about 11 years. During "solar maximum", the number of powerful energy explosions increases.

The Sun's current solar cycle officially began in early 2019 and is expected to peak between November 2024 and March 2026.

In May 2024, people in states as far south as Alabama got to see the amazing celestial phenomenon. According to NOAA, fall and spring are the best times to see the aurora in the US.
