Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky affirmed that the country may have to temporarily give up some territories controlled by Russia in exchange for joining NATO and ending the conflict. In response to the above developments, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said on December 4: "If we want peace in Ukraine, we will have to provide security guarantees. There is no cheaper way to ensure security than NATO's Article 5."

Zelensky's new calculation for NATO to protect Ukraine

Regarding the war, President Zelensky on December 3 called for strengthening forces in areas in eastern Ukraine along the 1,000 km front line, where the Russian army has recently made many advances. Mr. Zelensky emphasized that improving Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities, including boosting domestic weapons production, is a key factor in countering Russian attacks and protecting the lives of soldiers. Mr. Zelensky's statement came in the context of Russia taking control of two more villages, including Romanovka in Donetsk and Novodarovka in the Zaporozhie region, according to Reuters.
