Expanding domestic market for food industry

Through trade promotion and trade connection activities, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is striving to expand the market for the food industry, which has great potential.

Enterprises strive to affirm their position in the domestic market.

Vietnam’s food industry is entering a period of strong growth, thanks to the clear improvement in income, consumer demand of the people as well as the growth in the number of enterprises. Currently, the whole country has about 5,000 enterprises operating in the industry.

Mr. Vu Ba Phu, Director of the Trade Promotion Agency ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), once said that the Vietnamese food industry is experiencing impressive revenue growth, in which processed vegetables and fruits have risen to account for nearly 1/4 of the entire industry. This is an opportunity for businesses to affirm their brands right in the market.

Vietnam Foodexpo is an attractive destination for many suppliers in the food industry.

In fact, the consumption of food and beverages in Vietnam has grown significantly in recent years. Notably, the processed fruit and vegetable industry accounts for 24.7% of the industry's total revenue growth, and profits even increased by 205%. Key products such as mango, banana, dragon fruit, orange, pineapple, etc. have become bright spots not only in domestic consumption but also strongly oriented towards export.

It can be seen that, along with the product groups of alcohol - beer - soft drinks, milk processing, vegetable oil, flour - starch... the food industry has made an important contribution to the structure and value of the national industry. This is also the field that the Government prioritizes for development until 2025, with a vision to 2035, with a clear orientation when increasing the processing rate, applying international standards, building brands and increasing competitiveness.

In that picture, businesses have been making efforts to expand their domestic market share. In many localities, especially key agricultural areas such as Hai Phong, a series of specialty products have affirmed their brands: Thanh Ha litchi, Hoa Vang sticky rice, Chi Linh hill chicken, green bean cake, Ninh Giang sticky rice cake... However, most of the processing facilities are still small-scale households (accounting for up to 98%), lacking the connection between production and consumption.

Many localities also reflect that if we want agricultural and food products to have a long-term foothold, we must remove obstacles in land accumulation and credit capital, helping small-scale producers to link up and participate in the processing and consumption value chain.

Ministry of Industry and Trade accompanies and creates a connecting "playground"

In addition to the efforts of enterprises themselves, the support of management agencies, especially the Ministry of Industry and Trade, plays an important role in expanding the market for the food industry. In recent years, a series of trade promotion events have been implemented, becoming a "bridge" to help enterprises promote, connect and increase cooperation opportunities.

First of all, we must mention the Vietnam International Food Industry Exhibition (Vietnam Foodexpo) - a major annual event in the industry. In 2024 alone, more than 500 booths of nearly 400 domestic and foreign enterprises gathered in Ho Chi Minh City. The event not only honors Vietnamese food brands but is also a "grand show", bringing rich experiences to visitors, from agricultural products, seafood to processed foods, beverages, processing technology, and packaging.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thi Thang visits foreign partners' booth at Vietnam International Sourcing 2025

Entering 2025, Vietnam Foodexpo is scheduled to be held in November 2025 and will expand its scale to 600 booths from more than 23 countries and territories. With business connection programs, specialized seminars and special exhibition areas, the exhibition is expected to become a launching pad to help Vietnamese food businesses accelerate their access to domestic and international markets, while keeping up with green and sustainable consumption trends.

At the same time, Vietnam International Sourcing (VIS 2025), a series of events connecting international supply chains, is taking place in parallel with the Ho Chi Minh City International Tourism Fair and Export Forum. VIS 2025 has attracted 450 purchasing delegations from 60 countries, along with more than 400 Vietnamese enterprises introducing 12,000 products on an area of 10,000m².

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the event, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thi Thang emphasized that Vietnam International Sourcing not only promotes products but also creates investment flows, helping Vietnamese enterprises connect directly with the global supply chain.

The proactive participation of localities at VIS 2025 is also a notable highlight. Not only stopping at displaying products, many provinces and cities have mobilized to bring foreign business delegations to their localities to survey the investment environment and learn about strong products. Thereby, the opportunity to expand the market is not only limited to the scope of the fair, but also spreads directly into the production - processing - consumption value chain.

It can be seen that large-scale trade promotion activities such as Vietnam Foodexpo or Vietnam International Sourcing are not only a “playground” for trade but also a testament to the practical support of the State and businesses. Thanks to that, Vietnamese food products are increasingly affirmed in the domestic market, while creating a solid foundation for deep penetration into the global supply chain.

The food industry, with its huge potential for development, is becoming one of the important driving forces of the Vietnamese economy. The domestic market with its increasing consumer demand is identified as a “fertile land” for businesses to affirm their brands, improve quality and create sustainable values.

The accompaniment of the Ministry of Industry and Trade through trade promotion activities, international fairs and exhibitions has been opening up new opportunities, connecting businesses with the market, thereby creating solid progress for the Vietnamese food industry in the period of deep integration.
