Microsoft, Phison deny rumors that Windows 11 damages SSDs

Microsoft and SSD controller maker Phison have denied rumors circulating on social media in August that Windows 11 updates caused serious errors that damaged SSD drives.

According to WinBuzzer, this rumor appeared in mid-August through social media posts.

Some users have reported that after installing the KB5063878 and KB5062660 updates, SSDs — especially those that are more than 60 percent full — may experience critical errors when writing large amounts of data, resulting in inaccessibility.

The information quickly spread on platforms such as YouTube, X, causing concern in the technology community. The rumor also targeted SSDs using controllers from Phison, one of the industry's major manufacturers.

As one of the world's largest designers of NAND flash controllers, Phison's reputation is at stake.

On August 18, the company announced a large-scale investigation, mobilizing many resources to clarify.

By August 27, Phison announced the results: it had performed more than 2,200 test cycles with a total of 4,500 hours but could not reproduce the network propagation incident.

"We have not been able to reproduce the reported error, and to date no partners or customers have reported that their drives have been affected," a Phison spokesperson said.

Microsoft also opened a parallel investigation and announced on August 29 on Windows Release Health that diagnostic data did not show any unusual increase in drive errors.

"After a thorough investigation, we found no link between the August 2025 Windows security update and the hard drive failure as reported," said a Microsoft representative.

Independent and consistent investigations by both Microsoft and Phison show that the Windows 11 update does not harm SSDs. The rumor of a “hard drive-killing bug” is actually false.

Phison also recommends that users use a suitable heatsink when running heavy tasks to avoid overheating. For Microsoft's part, the company is committed to continuing to monitor feedback after each update and investigate if there are new reports.

The incident shows how quickly and alarmingly unverified information can spread in the tech community.
