Mr. Vu Ngoc Duong's family, Phuong Dao 2 village, Luong Thinh commune currently has over 10 hectares of forest, of which nearly 7 hectares are to be developed into a large timber forest with the main tree species being acacia, fat, lat, xoan...
Sharing the reason for keeping the family's forest areas to develop into large timber forests, Mr. Duong said: In my opinion, due to the hot climate here, keeping the forest is to have shade, regulate the air; at the same time, to keep the water source for the family; keeping the forest helps the air become fresher and cooler. The greener the forest, the more comfortable the living space. This is also a source of accumulation for the family, when there is a big event like building a house, buying a car..., I only need to sell a part of the family's forest area to cover the expenses."

Pointing to the nearly 1 hectare tallow forest right in front of his house, Mr. Duong excitedly boasted: “With just this nearly 1 hectare of tallow trees, my family has sold over 300 million VND. During the process of developing the large timber forest, my family also received a lot of support from forest rangers, from technical guidance on planting to thinning care. For newly planted areas, my family was supported with new varieties of seedlings to develop into a large timber forest later on.”
Leaving Mr. Duong's family's fat forest, we visited Mr. Tran Manh Tuong's family's cajuput forest, in Phuong Dao 2 village, Luong Thinh commune.
Mr. Tuong shared: “My family used to grow Bodhi trees on this entire area, but the economic efficiency was not high. After that, I switched to growing Gáo trees. More than 600 Gáo trees are now ready for harvest, but I will leave them to develop into a large timber forest, increasing the value of the trees. In just 2-3 years, each Gáo tree will generate an income of 2-3 million VND.”
Realizing that developing large timber forests brings many benefits, saving seedlings, reducing planting and care costs, reducing pests and diseases, limiting soil degradation, protecting the forest environment, and responding to climate change, many households in Luong Thinh commune have gradually converted the area of small timber trees to large timber trees to bring higher economic efficiency.

Mr. Pham Anh Duc - Chairman of the People's Committee of Luong Thinh Commune said: "Developing the hill forest economy, including large timber forests, has greatly contributed to the economic development of households, increasing income for people. The average income of the commune has reached 62 million VND/person/year. The whole commune currently has over 70 establishments processing planted forest wood; the annual exploitation volume is over 26,000 m3. The whole commune currently has over 185 hectares of FSC forest, large timber forests. The commune has coordinated with the forest rangers, households, units, and enterprises to maintain the existing large timber forest area well; at the same time, propagandize and mobilize people to continue planting new large timber trees such as hybrid acacia, cinnamon, and gáo... to expand the area".
Sharing about the orientations in developing large timber forests in the locality, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee Pham Anh Duc said: "The commune continues to review and deploy to the people to focus on planting perennial timber species, to create a source of quality timber with high economic value. Encourage households and businesses to participate in developing sustainable forest management plans, meeting the criteria for being granted sustainable forest certification, contributing to increasing product value and expanding export markets.
Actively apply advanced technology in selecting tree varieties, caring for, harvesting and processing wood to increase productivity and efficiency. Continue to study and apply policies to support preferential loans, tree seed and technical subsidies for people and forest planting enterprises. Strengthen forest fire prevention, forest protection and biodiversity conservation. Support linkages between forest growers, processing and product consumption enterprises to create a stable value chain, contributing to the sustainable development of the forest economy for people.
